Well just thought id give my opion on this and id like to hear your alls. Now im looking at what you think is the best cheap dog food $16 a bag or less and must be No smaller than 40lb bags. Heres my top five.

#1 Purina dog chow $12 a bag
#2 Ol Roy Lamb and Rice $13.50 a bag
#3 Ol Roy Premium Performance $14 a bag
#4 Turbo $7.50 a bag 40lb
#5 High Standard $10 a bag.

well these are my top 5 picks. i love the results i get from the purina dog chow. I also like the 2 ol roys i listed the high performance will put weight on a dog and the lamb and rice is nice to. IT being made by purina its a good choice. the turbo i used to by at a local feed store buy 5 bags at a time for $7.50 a bag i used it in self feeders and it worked good for me. Now for the high standard this is my last choice its seems like pretty good feed but alot more waste then the other 4. so what your alls thoughs on a good cheap dog food.

Price doesn't matter to me. Some dog foods cost more but you feed less. For example, one dog food says feed 1 3/4 cups for a 25 pound dog while another food says 1 1/4 cup for the same weight. I feed Diamond Performance which $19 a 40 lb bag but it requires feeding less food per weight.

im a purina fan and am in the purina pro club but this summer i started using ole yeller that i got via my mother from a grocery store in bedford indiana. dont know who makes it but the dogs do very well on it, they hold there weight very well and they love it, the best part, 10 bucks a bag for 50 lbs. 8.99 when it on sale. again i wouldnt have believed it if i hadnt used it. also no more waste then the dog chow.

spoke with a guy today who is developing a new breed of sled dog. it has about 4 different breeds in it. he asked me if I had ever heard or used Blackwood dog food. I did some research and found that not only is it superior to Diamond and Blackgold which is what I feed, it cost right at $30.00 for 40lbs. it has no grains, soy or additives or preservatives.

I have been feeding Buckeye Hi-Performance all summer long and the hounds are doing just fine. It is $13 for 50lb. I switch them to Buckeye Pro Kennel in season and through the winter. It is $15 for 40lb.

Old yeller is put out by kroger. a fox hunter i know swears by it to. now i know i would hear from some of you guys about the higher brands being better well i feed just as much of dog chow as i did the pro plan or the purina one so why pay that much but every dogs different. but the dog chow works for the majority of mine. i used to feed a dog food called excalliber hope i spelled that right lol it was good my dogs did good on it and i was runing them 6 days a week then. it only cost $7 a bag if bought in bulk.

I started using the "high performance" Ol' Roy about 13 yrs ago. Since then i've went back and forth with other so called "better" feeds.
For no more than i run my dogs the Ol' Roy suits them fine and i continue to feed it. Puppies do very good on it too!

Re: sled dogs

I've been told by a couple feed dealers that sled dogs burn their energy differently than hounds. A sled dog will require 24/20 where a beagle will do better on 26/18.
I've tried the 24/20 on beagles and they did not hold their weight.

I think different breeds of dog require different types of nutrition.

My dogs do well on Black Gold Black Bag.
It cost about the same as Purina Hi-Pro.

Do you honestly think thats even worth feeding? To a performance dog no less? Not only do they have to buy the ingredients, manufacture the bags, but they are also making a profit on the food. What did a 40pound bag cost them to make, $1??? :ashamed: The quality of ingredients mus be really poor.
Believe me, if you spend a few more dollars the dogs will be better off for it. Its not right to make them work for us, even if they love doing it, when we push them as hard as they'll go then feed them garbage.
Even table scraps would be better.
