Youngest pup hunting

Post by coolbrze »

Just curious as to the youngest you all have hunted pups w/ your adult hounds. I mean really turning the pup loose to run w/ seasoned hounds while hunting.

Coolbrze, I start taking my pups out with the rest of my pack at 8 weeks old. They often don't start running till they think they can keep up. Most of the time it's 4 to 5 months old but it varys from one to the other.

Just my opinion, but taking 8 week old pups to the field to run with the "pack" is about like taking a two year old kid to the baseball diamond and letting him take some infield with the pro's. Ludicrous and a waste of time... Tony

I have to agree. I'm not asking how old the pups are when they "can" run w/ seasoned hounds, but how old the pups are when they can hang w/ the older dogs and really get in on the chase. My latest pup was 10 weeks when she started, but I wouldn't consider running her w/ my other dogs.

So it was barking on a scent line at 10 weeks of age.

JMO but my thought in this matter is if you leave them home, HOW MUCH DO THEY LEARN THERE. By the time they reach the age to run they have already been exsposed to everything that a seasoned dog has. They learn all the so called yard work in the place where they will be spending the rest of their lives. Think what you want but 40 years and that many hounds and it has yet to fail. BTW would you take your kid to the ball diamond to play little league and show them the ball, bat and glove and tell them to play knowing they have never seen it played. No skiddish pups here.

Yes sir, she was yiping on the scent line at 10 weeks. I've got a good pic of her at 11 weeks, let me see if I can load it up and post it. Will webshots let me do this? I just don't see an 8 week old puppy running w/ my dogs in Nov. when we're hunting...

WOW I would like to have a pup start that early. The earliest I have had them start was 3 monthes and three weeks old. I would like to see a little 10 wk old pup yipping on the line. Very Cool

If you all will reread my post I said I start taking them out at 8 weks old. I really don't think that your 4 and 5 month olds can run with my pack either. If you don't believe me you are more than welcome to COME TO THE MOUNTAINS AND PUT UR TO THE TEST.

I'm welcoming you in the nicest way. If you are every this way, i would truly enjoy running with you and your hounds. Can even put you up for a weekend or more. I run 4 to 6 days a week, every week of the year. You're welcome here anytime...
