I use shelving scraps to make whelping boxes, but the principle is the same.
The pup can fit under the rail, but mom can't. Really makes a difference in pup survival rate.
BTW,,,,, "Fat Sara" had pups Monday night, so the whelping box is full :)

Here's my whelping box set up. Notice the PVC pipe that is painted different colors on different sides? That's so I can put it back together exactly as taken apart when I'm done with it. After I wean the pups and they go to the kennel I take the hog rail apart, fold up the whepling box and put the rail in it for storage out of the way. The red handles in the front are slide latches that latch the front and the back to the sides. Pull out on the latches, the sides are hinged and lay down flat onto the pallet.
