what can change a dogs attitude or hunting desire in the field? the reason that i am asking, i have a 19 month old male prior to 3 weeks ago he was doing everything that he was suppose to be doing (he has been running for the last year). three weeks ago he had a small coyote come in on him and another dog. both dogs put there tails between their legs and took off. a couple days later i took him out solo him and the coyote came back in on him. i believe that i have taken care of the coyote problem. besides the coyote problem i have moved out of the house and he is staying with my soon to be ex since i can have him were i am staying and he and i were(are)best friends and took naps together and if i could not run him i would take him for a walk.


in last week i have taken him out 3 times and he will still hunt but will not get 30 feet away from me, will get into the brush then comes right back out. if we kick on up he will take the track for about hundred yard and only open up once then comes back to me. i just been giving nice verbal encouragment. i spent the weekend with him and everytime that i left or went were he could not see me he would just bark so much i had to put the e collar on him. i was going to trail him this weekend but i did not want to blow him up any worse. i just hope that he becomes that dog that he use to be and i am just spending as much time with him as i can.

Keep takeing him out. Try running him with an older Finished hound a while then solo him. Hope it workes out sounds like a nice young hound.

Could be that there are still coyotes in the area, or have been recently and he still smells them. My Hannah bitch did that to me one day, she wouldn't leave my side and she never had done that before or after that. I was out in the boonies with a friend and we were at an old homestead and there were yotes all over the place that night. She wouldn't go 10 feet from me and that place was full of rabbits.

I had the same thought as Emery. I suspect that coyotes have been in the area the previous night and they are detecting the scent. Hoever, I have punished dogs while in the field, I came back to the same spot a few weeks later and the dog would not come near the spot that I whipped them. Some dogs are just more sensitive.

Give me a call some evening this week and I'll take Duke out with Bosco and we'll get him going again.
