I have contacted Cornell University and will be talking to Dr. Richard Goldstein, on Thursday, April 6, 2006, concerning beagles with kidney failure. I need more information from anyone who has had dogs with this problem....age, symptoms before taken to vet, recovered or not, type of wormer used. Please take the time to give me this information and just maybe we can get a handle on this. Email the information to
mikehatf@aol.com. your assistance in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Mike Hatfield

Mike,
I haven't had a dog with any renal dysfunction, but would be VERY interested in what you find out.
Also, if you could get his opinion on a correlation between high and low ash diets, it would be a great help. Alot of the foods that are being fed are made with meat and bone meal which can contain above average amounts of minerals (ash). There have been studies that indicate this as suspicious in renal disease/kidney failure, but always looking for other opinions.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Ask him if he thinks all of the Vaccines that are given to the dogs have any thing with Kidney failure. As well as products like frontline that are obsorbed into the skin.

Mike,
I had my son's bitch die from renal failure last summer. She was 5 years old. I purchased her when she was 18 months old. She was trialed/run very lightly, 5 ARHA trials, 2 UKC trials and 2 SPO trials and only entered into 1 large pack trial in her life. She was run at most 4 times a month not during hunting season. I fed her 21% protein in the summer and 26/27% protein in the winter. She received 1/10 cc of Ivermec on the 1st of the month (not 1/10 cc per 10 lbs, just 1/10 total). I have 2 - 13 year old and 2 - 10 year old 40 lb Brittnays that receive this exact same dosage.
About a month before she died she started getting finicky about eating. She would skip a meal sometimes but would eat the next day, so it didn't alarm me. I did not smell her breath. I didn't notice excessive drinking, becaused she was kenneled with other bitches. Her energy seemed fine. Even right up until the last week she still wanted to go run.
The vet that diagnosed her thought she may have had Lepto in the past that could effect her kidneys. Interestingly enough, a 5 month old pup out of her, came down with Lepto a few months later. This pup had never been off my property.
Good luck and I hope this helps. I think it is related to Lepto.
