How long to wait

Post by newdog »

The vet stated that I need to keep my female in low gear for ten days after she's fixed I want you guys opinions If I need to wait longer I will
I don't want to risk any injurys. She's a very active girl and keeping her toned down on activity will be hard but I want to make sure I do whats best for her.

Do what your vet said. Wait....

Had my 2 females fixed a couple months ago at 6 months of age. Vet told me to keep them "calm" for two weeks. Ha!!! LOL! My daughter is a Vet Tech and she said after 3 days don't have to worry much. The two week standard is a "Protect your a-- " thing." I kept them in house for 3 nights as vet said straw dust is not good for incision. Again, PRA from vet stand point. I sleep them in kennel, put them back outside after 3 days. They are in fenced in back yard during day. They acted as if they never had surgery.
Took them to Steve Cellar's Red Briar Kennels in Ashland, Ohio 2 months after surgery 8 months old, for a month to get them started. Got them back this past weekend. They are running !!!!!!!!!!! And look great!!!!!!!!

Thanks DG
It's not that I want to have her out before the ten days are up I just know she isn't going to stand to be kept down for that long. The night before the surgery she caught a rabbit in the back yard and there back there quite a bit so the only way I'll have of keeping her calmed down is to take her out and stay with her while shes out

I think she'll be fine. One of the vet's wife where I take them told me when they had their dog fixed it was lathargic the day they brought her home and the next day. The third day they let her outside and she chased a squirrel up a tree. I'd just keep an eye on her when she is out and try and keep her from over doing it the first couple of days. Don't run her until stiches are out. My two wrestled and jumped up in chair the second day.
She'll be fine.
