What part of VA. I know of a couple. One in North Carolina. Or if you are near Richmond, Nate Johnson might know somebody.

Melvin Norman has a starting pen. He's located on the Goochland/Cumberland county line. His number is 804-375-9216.

This is none of my business, but I'm still trying to figure out why someone would want to use a starting pen. With spring in the air and baby bunnies on the way it is prime time to start pups in the wild. I have been raising and training beagles for 15 years and have train a bunch of good ones and have never used a starting pen. When I look back at all these beagles that I have trained, I can say I did it myself. Sorry for stepping on your post there S&J kennels, just a question that I have had on my mind for a while. If you are unable to find a starting pen, you are welcome to bring your pup over the mountain to Staunton and I'll start it in the wild for you. Again, Sorry for stepping on your Post. Somebody please straighten me out. THANKS......

Starting pens seem to work better for me. I trust the gentleman who starts pups for me. He keeps them for four weeks. I work from 8 to 5 and in the winter that leaves no time at all. He can show them more rabbits in a week than I could show them in four months. They sight run until they start tracking then they run at night with an older vetran in a 35 acre rabbit paradise with no off game or distractions. If the pup is not showing interest he will tell me honestly what his forty years of experience thinks.
When I pick them up I get to watch the pup run. The rabbits come to corn feeders at night and the pen is grown up so they have to hunt some.
He will not take any before they are 6 months old and only takes a certain number 9 months out of the year.

Jim,

I'll be glad to answer your question in regards to me. I go through a lot of puppies in order to find the type of dog I need to fill positions in my pack.

Not only do I use a starter pen, I then send puppies that are worthy to a 40 acre running enclosure for a month or so of constant running after one week in the small pen. They live in there for the entire 4-6 weeks. They're only taken out when they're run down from exhaustion and or sore feet.

I call the starter pen "Pre-School'' or the 'Head Start Program" After finishing the enclosure. They have college degrees and are now ready for a career in the real world. With me or someone else. Just like people, not all puppies make it in their first chosen career at my company. They get transfers due to size, speed, mouth, personality conflicts, and etc., etc.

In the area where I live, I spend more time looking for a rabbit to run than actually running the bunny. I need all the advantages I can get. Starter pens and enclosures have been very good to me, and I will continue use them and raise good dogs too. And no, I didn't do it all by myself. In this hi-tech society, I use all the technological devices that I have access to.

Now I have a question for you, do you own or have used a microwave oven? How about tracking collars and or remote training collars. For the past couple of years we have been using walkie talkies to aid in Rabbit hunting.

Yep Jim, times surely have changed and if we don't change with them well, you know what happened to the dinosaurs. LOL :)

Not to ramble on but, a few years ago a person had to read the magazines to find out where a trial was and how it turned out. Now there are computers. And before that, natives used smoke and drums to communicate. Now there are telephones, heck one day I'm going buy me one of those wireless cell phones. LOL :)

Just having fun Jim and not trying to be sarcastic but yep, starter pens and enclosures work for me.

But nothing, takes the place of time in the field.

Keep'em running Jim, and "may your dogs run with a controlled rage."

Thanks there BJK. I guess I'm blessed with the situation that i'm in. I can turn my dogs loose from the kennel and can be running rabbits within minutes. No roads and plenty of rabbits. Both my brother and I run them at least three times a week and every weekend. Thanks for your time and again sorry about stepping on the thread.

No need to apologize Jim, just cherish the area where you have to run. Honestly, we have more deer here than rabbits. Here in the eastern and central part of the state I feel that the state biologist and game comission cater to Turkey and Deer hunters. I guess those are the money makers here in VA. But that doesn't stop us, we keep on keep'in on.

Anthony: I live near Petersburg.

If you other guys wanted to have a discussion concerning my post why didn't you start your own?
I appreciate your opinions but it is kind of rude to jump in, don't you think?

The guy that Nate suggested is very capable. I own two females that were started by Melvin. I did not send them there I bought them both after they were started . I think he will be close to Petersburg. The fellow who starts pups for me is just below Danville VA. You have to book early and I don't think he takes any when it gets hot. He sometimes has people to cancel. The dog has to be at least 6 months old. If your interested I can give you his phone number.

Thanks Bread and Jeff. Thats what I was looking for.

Hounddog, Just made the point that it was rude to jump my post. I have no problem if it concerned what I asked. It would have been very simple to start your own thread.
