Cutting e-collar length

How many inches do you all cut off your e-collars? My Tritronics Classic 70s are waaay to long for my beagles. I have no intention of using them on much larger dogs and I'm not worried about resale. I'm thinking of cutting about 8-10" off, does this sound about right?

Strap it on your dogs neck them mark about 4 1/2 inches out from the buckle maybe a little more. Then cut it and you should be good.

I cut one of my collars and have regreted it since. I have used them on larger dogs. But, anyhow, leave enough end to be able to tape it down. If running in the heavy bush, duct tape is great insurance to make sure the collar returns with the dog. If collar too short, better chance of it getting snagged and coming undone. That is an expensive day in the field then. lol Experience speaking... Carolyn

I reget the day that I cut mine. I cut one and didn't cut the other one, the one that was cut. (I left it 6 inches long) they just went through the brush just hunting and the dog came back without the collar. We look for it for a couple of hours but did not find it. A little advice don't cut it. Just take the little black clip that slids up and down the collar. Slip the remaining piece thru it and leave the rest alone or tape it down. I just leave mine alone been running the dogs with it for the last 2 years with no problem.

Even if there's a good 14" of loose collar? I'm just curious. I like the tape idea. Had also thought about zip ties.

I do not cut my E-Collars. I use large O-Rings and auto snaps to secure the loose end back to the collar. I got the snaps from Lowes and are the type that are used to secure auto door pannels and dash sections. Using these snaps makes putting the collars on and more important getting them off a little hard. You will have to use a hot nail or iron to inlarge the holes that the snap will go in and you will have to put collars on the dogs that the collar are sized for. You can use it on other lager or small hounds but may need to move the snap. Sounds complicated but it is much better than putting tape on and off.

The O-Ring holds the end section of the collar close. and the section that covers the front of the unit provides protection. Where the bottom and top rubber type collars touch is almost slip free which helps to insure the collar never comes un-buckled. This works well fo me......

i cut mine so i have about 6 or 7 inches of extra. ive got a classic 70 xls and with their buckle, ive never had any come undone. with the older BEAGLER model i had, i had to be careful because the buckle on that was a terrible design and came loose often. i guess duck tape would be a easy fix if they come loose for anyone.

For the ones that go around the shocker 22" The easy fix to not losing is double buckle the new collars come with them. Easy to replace old ones.

I've cut mine down where there is about 5 inches sticking out. My collars have the newer double buckle on them. Havent had any trouble yet.

I have a good 12 to 14 inches left out. It is so thin that it doesn't effect it. I like the idea that Sunrise has or the snap. But don't cut it.

I use the small plastic wire ties instead of the snaps or Orings. I have a small pair of side cutter pliers in the kennel building and just clip the wire ties when I am ready to take the collars off. I have the double buckles and had no problems until a couple of weeks ago when due to heavy briars one of my collars came off and I lost it completely. It will cost a couple of hundred to get it replaced so I advise everyone to use something to secure the collar in case the buckle does come undone.The small plastic wire ties are easy to put on and take off and not very expensive.

Thanks everyone! What's this double buckle you all talk about? Is it the buckle system on the Tritronics G2s? It seems pretty secure to me, but then again, I don't want to be out a couple hundred. I think I'm going to try small zip ties and see how that holds the excess collar instead of cutting the collar down.

I ordered new reflective collars from Boatman's for my shock collars. That way if running at night they are reflective or if the dog loses it, you can hopefully find it with a flashlight. Ordered them 17" long, comes close to a 15" collar bacause of eaxtra 1" on each side of collar, punch a hole between each hole, also put on a name tag. Use vasaline to start collar because they are thicker than collars from tri-tronics.

cut, but leave some extra. I use small zip strips just to be safe. Cheaper than replacing collar.

If you cut them too short don't worry about it you can replace them for about five bucks. I recently bought a 4 dog set that had been cut too short. But I have always cut some off.
