I have a male out of ThreeJays Jack Ace he is 6 Months old. I have taken him to the Jump pen twice know and he really shows little interest. He will start after a rabbit and then he will just stop and play around. I am new to the game but the 3 pups prior to him really did well at 4 1/2 months old. I guess I just need to be more patient with him. But I thought I would ask the field of experts.

Danny,

In my limited experience, I have found that each dog (or pup) is very different. One of my dogs (a male) didn't start until almost a year old, while another start around 5 months. It seems to me (again my personal experience), that males seem to start a little slower than females. I don't think this is always the case however and shouldn't be generalized.
Also, early starters don't mean better (when it comes to running rabbits) adults.
I love starting pups. It gives me great pleasure to watch the "switch" flip into the on position! :)

Good luck with your pup.

Danny, post your question at http://www.beaglescanada.com I trained my bitch with Ace. He ran well. Your pup may need more exposure and do you have an older solid bitch for him to learn from? As Bunny Runner says, you have to give exposure until the switch flips. Those Threejays dogs are pretty stubborn. lol I know the breeder well! Carolyn

Keep working with him and have alot of patience. I just had a male pup that was in a starting pen for about 3 weeks and didnt start. I'm going to keep working with him until he starts.

Bunny runner and showdog gave some good advice and info.

Good luck with him.
