I was just curious. Since I haven't been around a lot of hunting beagles only show dogs I was curious where the term for "Gyp" when referring to female beagles came from?

Not sure where the term came from and it has two different meanings when referring to dogs. Some say they are a gyp until they have had a litter of pups and then they become a bitch. Others say they are a gyp until they reach a certain age and from that day on are called a bitch.

Gyp is an old coonhunters term for a female...

Well, it has been a beagling term for at least 50 years and it refers to a young female that has NOT been bred.

I'm 47 and I've heard it all my life. Both my grandfathers were hunters,
1 was a fox hunter and the other was a coon hunter and they both use this term. It don't matter to me which line of hunters startrd it. To me it's a young female till she whelps her 1st litter. I did hear a story 1 time, something about getting gyp'd out of pups,but I can't remember,I'm checking.

that surprises me that beaglers use gyp too... I had an old beagler about 95 yrs young ask me why coonhunters use gyp when beaglers always say bitch when referring to a female????? Maybe it's a regional thing ???

My granddad wrote alot of his records and pedigrees on the walls in his kennels. He was using the term gyp in the late 1910's early 1920's when referring to the # of male/female pups a bitch had. I am betting it is a term that that came across the pond with the earliest hounds. Most likely foxhounds. It most definitely means a female before whelping a litter. Kinda like calling a cow ,before calving, a heifer.

You all are wrong. The term "gyp" was started by Lynn Perkins when describing his hound trades with Ronnie Bentley, David Anderson, Johnny Mike, and many others. When asked to describe his deals and trades, he usually says, "I got gypped." He said it so often, that everyone began to reply, "man, ain't it a b----!" Hence, Lynn Perkins is responsible for the invention and application of both words, actually.
