this morning i went to the pin to feed the dogs and my male's eye was matted completely shut. the other one was not as bad but still alil rough. any idea of the cause??

It's a good chance that he has scratched his eye some how. Eye ointment might help. Hope this helps.

I went through this........................... it was only allergies for my dog and childrens benadril ( Spelling bad) cleared it up. Only my 2 cents, but it worked for me

If your dog has been out running lately, it is entirely possible that he has something in his eyes. Even both of them! Take some saline solution (stuff you would rinse contact lenses with) and flush out his eyes. It is a good idea to do this after each time out in the field. Little pieces of grass, weeds, or seeds or twigs... can get in there and you wouldn't know about it until his eyes water up and get matted shut. Also something good to keep on hand would be some opthamalogic ointment (something safe to put in the eyes). A little preventative maintenance goes a long ways in stopping eye trouble before it happens. Believe me, I know from experience.

i had him out on saturday and the poor guy run just about all of his weight off in 8 hours and got a thorn in one of his pads. so since sunday he has been living it up with the Xtra speacial treament and treats.. just hope that i can get his eyes cleaned out for this weekend..i have some saline flush syringes around the store somewhere. so i'll try that first and if come friday the lil guy is still matted up, i'll slip him the childrens benadroyl. thanks for the help and i'll let u guys know what is acutally causing it..

If he ran for 8 hours on Sat, it is probably irritation. An eye ointment from drug store will help with regular saline flushing. Allergies don't feel right! lol

There's a small tube of stuff you can get from a vet, cost maybe 5-6 dollars, it will clear it up in no time ( 2-3 hours most of the time). if you choose not to do that be sure what ever you use does not have steroids in it. good luck

I had this problem a few weeks back. Had a large pack out on Saturday for a very long 8 hour hunt where they pounded rabbits in weeds and brush all day. Thought something was wrong as I had never seen this but an experience beagler told me it would clear up in a few days with the flushing of their eyes with a warm salt water rinse. He was right. All but a few dogs we had out had this problem. Guess we know who wasn't in the brush all day. Good luck.

I use turpintine and pine tar for dogs with sore feet or a torn in foot.

I would pull the the bottom eye lid down and see if you find any seeds or foreign matter in the eye and keep rinsing them. DON'T USE OINTMENTS WITH STEROIDS IN THEM.

Some of my dogs eyes get looking bad after they have been ran hard all day,seems that it is worse at different times of the year. I wash their eyes out with saline, and they are usually better the next day.

hey guys, used the saline rinse for 2 days now and the dog is doin great. i never saw anything in his eyes but it seemed to help a great deal. hopefully by tomorrow mornig the eyes will be cleared for great hunting!! not that my female is in season he'll feel like giving me some pups! javascript:emoticon(':lol:')

The vet I use told me to flush the dog's eyes with Vizine AC after the hunt.

I have used this successfully.
