Dog in Heat soon want to run her

Post by MrJ »

Im a Fishng Charter Capt here in VA and am just starting to be able to have time to start Rabbit Hunting. My best dog will be in heat by Jan 1st. Is there anything I can give her (heard of some suff called "No Male" or something) that will keep the males off her. If I bread her will she still go the full 21 days as I am thinking of doing that. Know you use to could give them a shot but heard that was bad for the dog. Really hate putting her out of commision for 21 days.

That is the price you pay for having an intact female. If you don't want puppies, then don't put her out. Nothing is foolproof other than abstinence.

If she is bred, then she will stop her cycle in a couple of days. I don't actually have any experience with the "no mate" sprays, but would have to wonder how effective they REALLY are. Seems like they are really more GIMMICK than fact and just a way to get your MONEY (JMO). So, you would have to decide if the possibility of it working is worth the risk of an UNWANTED breeding.

If you breed her you will still be able to run until the end of season. She will be a little slower but i have run mine right upto 2 weeks before she is due to welp just have to watch her a little more closley is all.

Mr. J
I put a tablespoon of clorine bleach per gallon of fresh water in any females drinking water two weeks before they are to come in heat if I want to stop the heat. Sometimes they will miss that heat completely and sometimes they will come in a month or two later. Do it initially and every fourth day change the water and add (clorox) every fourth day and stop after two weeks.
We already have clorine bleach added by the city in our drinking water that I use for the dogs water too. Before when we had a pure water well we used twice that amount of bleach.
