To many rabbits

Have you ever ran in place where there were so many rabbits that the dogs could not keep the same one going? I ran three dogs today and at one time I saw 6 rabbits at the same time. The dogs would be working one rabbit and then hit a different track and work that and so on and so on. It made for very poor running. It was snowing so hard that a track got covered up pretty quick and I think the dogs just ran the hottest track at the place they were at the time. I am going to hunt this place a little an thin down some of the rabbits. A great place to start a young dog though.

theres a place like that where i live. mostly everyone just uses it to start and train pups. Know one is allowed to gun hunt it, but they can just run there dogs.

beaglehandler,,,,,,,,,,,i have a place about a half acre,,,,,,,,last year keith my self and 2 boys ran there, we had 21 rabbits come out of this thicket,,,seems dogs would jump one the jump another then another,,,,it was really confusing to the dogs early last year around feb there was a 16 acre patch with nothing but buck brush,,,,,,,,,the dogs would be hammering a rabbit and we would stand on a hill and you could actually see rabbits running every where looked like goffers in the western plains but they planted it all but this half acre so we are gonna thin it out tomorrow,,,,,,,,

I've got 2 places like that here. I shot 50 rabbits out of the smaller area last year and can still go in and have a rabbit up in just a few minutes and then see half a dozen while the dogs are running.

I had a spot like that but it has been "thinned down" too much. Best I heard yet was my cousin went to Kansas for pheasant and they pushed a wide fence row and he lost count at 30 on the rabbits that came out the end.I can't imagine a pack of dogs in that situation but would enjoy "thinning it down" :P

I ran the same place today and lost dogs in the snow drifts. The runs looked like the OJ car chase that was seen on TV. Snow was so deep that rabbits and dogs had a hard time running. One rabbit ran to the fence and I think ran under the snow that was piled up. A bad of running dogs beats any day a work.

I would love to thin out some of them problem areas for you guys. Here where we hunt on a good day with a hard hunting pack 6 - 10 rabbits are pretty good.

I've got three places like the ones mentioned above but I don't allow any shooting or just one every once in a while.I know their life span isn't very long but I keep thinking if I go to shooting them, they won't be there any longer and I love just hearing the hounds on the hot trail of a bunny.

take me with you
