are you talking about wire to use for the floor or for the sides? if you are talking about the sides then i would get 1x2 because in the summer i always have a problem with the birds getting in the pen and doing their business all over the place. if its for the floor i would use 1x1 with some kind of coating over it.....keith

I aim to try expanded metal for flooring. I ordered some the other day with inch and a quarter holes and plan on getting either a roll-on or spray-on bedliner kit to coat it with. I just figured if it will last a lifetime in the bed of a truck then I should get several years from it in a kennel. I am just doing one run to see if I like it and if so then I will build another for our other beagle.

Blackjack,, I used that expanded wire and TORE it out, droppings had to be helpped out of the pen daily, and removed when it froze........
I used the 1 bye 1 1/2 for the base, galv.

I use aluminum expanded metal that was run through a set of rollers at the factory so it would be flat. No raised edges, no rust. When I used 1"X2" wire I had to replace it every few years due to it rusting out. Dog urine takes a toll on regular fence wire.
