Most of the basic work should be done from the earliest point possible. I like to start my puppies as early they show some interest. This means I start to teach them to come to my commands at 8 weeks old. It requires a lot of attention at even an earlier age. By the time they are 4 months old they are ready for the field. You can't get a pup and put them in a pen until they are ready to hunt and expect them to handle for you. It just does't happen. Spend all the time you can with them at the earliest age you can. Hope this helps!

do they listen to the commands and how do you train them on rabbits

They will listen because they don't forget who feeds them. I like to take my pups everywhere I go if possible. I let them run around the farm with me. They soon learn what they can do and can't do. A puppy is just like a child, they will get by with what ever you let them by with. Be firm with your commands. As far as the rabbit part, most will run by instinct. Good luck!

Starting Pups

I'm new to running beagles and most in my area don't start really working them till 4-6mths! I thought this was crazy & take mine everywhere! My 7 mth girls are at the front of the pack & my 3 mth male scented a rabbit the other day that the pack then jumped! He didn't know what he was doing but it smelled good! :D It's also helping the little ones to listen to the hounds & they keep up with the big dogs for most of the morning. I agree with the other posts, if you spend time with them from the start they see you as thier pack leader so it's natural for them to listen to you. Besides, whats better company than beagle pups!

It sounds as if you have things figured out. If it's working for you, stay with it.

I DONT THINK YOU CAN EVER START TOO SOON

i start taking my pups out at 8 to 10 weeks i have one that started trailing a rabbit at 9 weeks she would only go maybe 10 to 20 ft in 5 minutes but it was a beginning just dont train for long periods they are still pups that want to play

i more or less take them out and they start when they are ready

Snacks are key to pups. They learn real quick to come when called, when you give them a piece of bacon or steak fat each time. My pups handle great! And my 4 month old female started trailing yesterday. Last year I started a half brother to her and he circled his first rabbit at 5 months!
Good luck.

why dont ya get a dog and try it out its alot more fun then sitting on a computer and thinking that what people type is going to work get a dog and work with it, it will learn out of instinct to chase the rabbit.
