Would entering a dog under their format be a waste of time for a fast dog? I would hate to waste my time and money and get picked up for non sense like "too much foot".

speed will not get your dog in trouble at any of the pbga trials i've been to over running and swinging will. most of the trials are SPO format with some gundog brace mixed in. i would sample both but the spo would probably be more to your liking with a faster dog. best of luck to you and your dog/s enjoy it!

I went to a trial locally as an observer Mason Dixon to be exact. I basically just watched the dogs for some time. The dogs were on the slow side of my taste and the guys were griping about these dogs running too much rabbit. I just don't want to waste my time if the dog is going to get picked up for leaving the other dogs behind. I've run with some of the dogs that get trialed up there and the gap between dogs gets pretty big on a good chase.

incahoots, i guess i should have gone into a little more depth on my last post. the region of pa i live in is very close to the NY border and alot of the hounds are more "footier" with the influence of much of the hare breeding. and some of the faster spo dogs. if i were you i would look to compete more in the northeastern part of this state or the southern tier of NY i don't think you will be too far off however if i'm wrong it's not that much further to large pack country.
check into clubs like Lycoming, west branch, susquehanna,towanda, eldred to name a few in the pbgaand broome ,glendale ,corning ,cayuga lake ,pioneer ,java village, neversink in the IBGA (NY) area This is by no means a complete listing but it will give you some ideas where to compete your hounds . again best of luck!

Without exaggeration, a dog with Progressive Pack style and speed would be 75 to a 100 yards ahead of SPO style and speed dogs.

never seen a progressive pack trial so i really couldn't comment but i have a feeling if a dog could accomplish that and not be that far off a line or turn that would be one fantastic dog and should win in any format or registry!!

not in SPO they can't or not allowed to win. If the judge has to go faster then a walk to keep up, your dog will be picked up.

big mike, not to get in a squabble but all i can say is come on up and see for yourself. i can promise you this even if the dogs are not fast enough for your liking you won't see too many judges walking to keep up with the hounds. they will be on a dead run for most of the day!!

Well We run the SPO Format out here and You DANG sure wont be walkin behind any of these Dogs LOL.... I think it has a lot to do with what part of the Country you are in We Run a Midwest SPO Or So I have been told .Most of the Dogs that trial out here are Also UKC hound and hunter type Dogs.
Again I think It Depends On the Part or Region Of the Country you are in, Most of the PBGA Formats I have seen Do seem to Favour a slower Style Almost Walky Talky Though

I just started trialing in the past year and the SPO PBGA clubs that timberdoodle is refurring to are some of the ones I have run at. The dogs I saw run were BY FAR walky talky hounds. They were any where from medium speed to fast hounds. The dogs run as fast as the scent will let them. The majority, I would say, were upper medium. If you look in the pbga hall of fame one of the dogs is Tuscarora Danny Boy, who is out of Salt River Lilly and Indian Hills Rowdy. This dog is still producing and I personally know dogs that are FC out of him. They can smoke a rabbit at upper medium speed. This dog is a full sibling to Indian Hills Princess II who was one of the best females who ran in the Mid west.

FOLKS TO EACH HIS OWN I an only tell you that for most of the summer i have been running against some very good and what i would consider faST bitches. Vic Costanza (Maravic Kennels) has been pretty much cleaning my clock with a very good bitch. I had to back off a bit because i can condition my dogs to the hot temperatures that we've had here but i can't condition them to the speed that they are facing at the trials in the heat. Maybe when things cool down a bit my walky talkies will stand some kinda chance!!

I wouldn't call what I seen walkie takies probally med fast tops. I run UKC and intent to run UKC primarily but would like to drop this female in a local trial. Is a dogs speed a legitamite reason to be picked up? Based on what I seen that day and I watched at least 5 casts she will extend from the pack and keep extending.

If you are not pleasedwith the style of hounds you are seeing in your locale you are just going to have to travel to where hounds of your style are competing or get some hounds that are succeeding in competition locally and compete with those hounds or convince the clubs and judges in your area that you are right and they are wrong and the world would be much better if they just did it your way lol anyway hope this helps somewhat!
