Cedar Shavings fact/fiction

Post by Big Mike »

I have been told that using Cedar Shavings as bedding will detract from a dogs tracking ability ? Is their any factual proof of this, or is this an ole hunters theory thats been carried on as fact over the years.

I use cedar never had any problems here. Just like anything though some dogs can have allergies and it might mess with them but all in all I would say no.

cedar shavings

Post by Big Dog »

I used them dad gum cedar shavings last year and we only killed about 200 rabbits, if not for the cedar shavings we would have killed 500. :D Just kidding, that is baloney. I use cedar shavings and don't have any problems now and never have in the past. Don't use them with pups as they may choke on them, but have had no problems with anything over 3 months old.

I have also heard they will help with fleas. they don't like the cedar oil smell. Ticks don't seem to mind it though.

I had to learn about cedar bedding. It smells good but thats about it. I have three pups kenneled together, but only one had an allergic reaction after a month of using it. He was sneezing and dripping blood from his nose, I took him to the vet, they gave him some meds. They told me to take the cedar out, fortunately he's fine now! FACT for some FICTION for others.

Have to agree with Jack on this one. Cedar can cause many problems that we wouldn't probably associate with it.
Plus, they don't absorb like pine or aspen and when wet, they are even more volitile.

My motto is, if it CAN cause a problem, why take the CHANCE!!!

Greg,

You could use pine shavings or Aspen. Aspen is a great product, but alot more costly than pine. I personally use pine shavings.
