MANY PEOPLE SAY BEAGLES WITH BLOCKED HEADS ARE BETTER THEN ONES WITH POINTED NOSES. IS THIS TRUE OR IS THIS JUST ONE MANS OPINION. I HAVE BOTH AND I WOULDN'T TAKE ANYTHING FOR MY ONE MALE WHO DOES HAVE A POINTED MOUTH I GUESS U CAN SAY. I KNOW MANY PEOPLE WILL NOT BUY A PUP THAT HAS A POINTED MOUTH TO HIM.IS IT NOT A GOOD IDEA TO USE HIM FOR BREEDING CAUSE OF THIS REASON? THANKS, TRACKER

I believe it's just one man's opinion.I have 2 females that have the fox face[pointy nose]and I wouldn't trade them hounds for a fresh can of copenhagen ha,ha.They are a couple of good bitches. Now my buddy has a block head female that is an excellent dog.I think it's all in what YOU like.

Pointed nose don't have houndy looking face. Almost all hunters prefer their beagles to look houndy but I wouldn't mind keeping a good ugly dog.

All the books I've read on beagles show that block houndy head!!!! Now my question is where'd all these pointed snozzola heads come from??? You don't think some of these breeders have slipped in a grade hound here and there and used the AKC papers off another hound???? NO SAY IT AIN"T SO!!!!! I mean with all the talk of the perfect beagle on here some of them must have cheated somewhere along the way!!!

The pictures of show beagles in the early 1900s did not have blocky heads. Sooo, where did the present day show beagles get their blocky heads? Did they cross with the bull dogs?
If a hound has a blocky head, a muzzle with long flews, it will have problems if it works checks with its nose close to the ground. Those flews become raw and inflamed from hitting weeds and stubble. If your hound doesn't put his nose to the ground and work checks, the blocky head will be fine.
Show breeders breed for looks, not for utility.

Head
The skull should be fairly long, slightly domed at occiput, with cranium broad and full.
Ears: Ears set on moderately low, long, reaching when drawn out nearly if not quite to the end of the nose; fine in texture, fairly broad -- with almost entire absence of erectile power -- setting close to the head, with the forward edge slightly inturning to the cheek -- rounded at tip.
Eyes: Eyes large, set well apart -- soft and houndlike --expression gentle and pleading; of a brown or hazel color.
Muzzle: Muzzle of medium length -- straight and square-cut -- the stop moderately defined.
Jaws: Level. Lips free from flews; nostrils large and open.
Defects: A very flat skull, narrow across the top; excess of dome, eyes small, sharp and terrierlike, or prominent and protruding; muzzle long, snipy or cut away decidedly below the eyes, or very short. Roman-nosed or upturned giving a dish-faced expression. Ears short, set on high or with a tendency to rise above the point of origin.

Even w/ the detailed definition TC provided of the breed standard it is still widely subjective. "Muzzle of medium length." ? That is like saying my beagle is medium speed, isn't it - could mean anything. Beagles have got to be the breed w/ the widest range of variance when it comes to confirmation, color, size, etc. But, that is one of the reasons they are so interesting!

BTW - I prefer a blocky head to a fox face.

Well these may not be of the 1900s but will 1945 do???
Where are the snippy noses??
I even threw one in of a Show champ just to get a comparison!!

Well, I too have both but breed standard does perfer a blocky head. And as far as those pictures from a fox hunt those aren't beagles and maybe the artist just lacks ability in painting animals. LOL I have not noticed a difference running in mine block or not they rock. LOL have a good one, Paul

The reason a lot of beaglers prefer blocky is because when you look at all of those field champion. All of them or most of them has blocky head.
