Jimmie, that took a lot of guts to post something like that in a public forum. I know you did it so others could learn from your mistake. We all need to be cautious when running our dogs, not just because of the heat, but also because dogs come up missing when left alone to run in the open field.
Sorry for your loss, and hopefully everyone can learn from this.

We don't run our dogs in the heat. The dogs only know and do what they are bred to do with total disregard to their health but we do know whats best for them.

I LIVE IN A SECLUDED AREA OF AROUND 300 ACRES I HAVE KICKED DOGS LOOSE FOR SEVERAL YEARS ,BASICALLY I HAVE NEVER LOST A DOG TO HEAT- MY DOGS RUN TILL THEY GET HOT AND COME ON IN,THEY ALL WAYS GREET ME AT THE FARM ENTRANCE-THE FEMALES WERE MORE OR LESS FARM HOUNDS ANYWAY-LEFT LOOSE MOST OF THE TIME ANYWAY, I STARTED WONDERING THIS MORNING ON MY WAY IN -THEY WERE HARE BRED TOP SIDE AND COTTEN TAIL BOTTOM-MY MALE IS HAREBOTH SIDES -LUMBERJACK BOTTOM SIDE AND PACESETTER TOP
MAYBE HE DRUG EM TOHARD TO LONG?darn DID NOT REALLY WANT TO MELT THEM ! ANYBODY ELSE GOT ANY IDEALS ? THIS IS STRANGE TO ME CAUSE DOGS THAT USSALLY RUN LOOSE ARE TOUGHER

Remember Korey Stringer, Minnesota Vikings, 2002? Died or melted due to practice in high heat. Apparently forced to practice by the coach. He was supposedly tough too. Just an example- there are lots more.

Jimmy,
Some dogs will quit when they get hot and some will not I have had both types of dogs. Just have to watch them all make sure they can take it. Sorry about the dogs, we all make mistakes sometimes and we have to live and learn. Good Luck.

Sorry you lost your females.
Sometimes conditions we do not know of can cause problems running. I used to always let mine run loose and they would come in when they got ready. Does make them stronger and in better shape.
Could have been what they ate or drank or what they didn't eat or drink before running or the ground heat may of been different than normal. Dryer, more sunny, air flow, and temperature or humidity different.
Some conditions will suck the life out of you or an animal much faster than others and they would not know it nor would most people.

my vet says that some dogs that are exercised heavily can have a fatal heat stroke at temps as low as 79-80 degrees. Can even cause kidney damage also.

Sorry for your loss, we've had a sweltering summer here, have run the hounds very little compared to most years. I will not run them in the heat anymore, too hard on the hounds and the game as well.
