I have some questions about new pups

Post by Rusty Shackleford »

I have a brand new litter of puppys and I have a few questions:

1. When do I remove the dew claws?

2. The mother is still bleeding a little 2 days later, Is that normal?

3. When will the mother go into heat again?

Thank you all for all of your help!

Rusty How is your extermination business going? Your son sure does look a lot like John Redcorn. How are Bill ,Hank, and Boomhower doing?
To answer your ?s . I would clip off the Dew claws in the next couple of days. It is normal to bleed for several days.
Some females come back in in 6 months.
I have had some that take 9 months from the last heat after raising a litter of puppies.

Don't be surprised if your bitch comes back into heat when her pups are about 4 months old. (basically 6 months from her last heat - not 6 months from her whelping). Bitches aren't all alike, but if she's on a pretty regular schedule - start watching her 4 months after whelping. Some folks get surprised when they come in again that soon, but it's actually in keeping with the "every 6 months" schedule. It's best to be prepared, lol.

BTW, welcome to the board!

I usully take off the dew claws at three days old. I make sure to have some super glue right handy in case I have a bleeder. I clamp hemastats close to the leg. Give it a couple minutes to cut off the blood flow and scrape them off with my finger nail. Then open the stats. So far I have only had one bleeder, I thought I would pass out where I stood....LMAO!

Vaginal discharge is normal for up to six weeks. Anything over that is a problem. Keep an eye on temp the first week because it can rise (sign of infection). Anytime a dog is off their food, there is some kind of problem. We all know how beagles love to eat. Mine would like to eat me out of house and home...LOL.

Heat cycle is just as the other folks said....Good luck with your new pups.
