Q about off the ground pens??

Post by MSU Dawg »

Hello all!

I hope everything finds you well. I am new to beagles & had a Q about off the ground pens. I've been seeing them a lot lately. Why are beagles kept in off the ground pens? I would think a nice large traditional kennel would be nicer. More room to run & play. Now I'm not knocking those of you who use off the ground pens, I'm just puzzled as to why they are used. Can anyone out there enlighten me? :?:

Thanks!

i know i use them for sanitary reasons...less worm problems, easy to clean...as far as getting more room, you could build a nice size above ground run for a beagle.

I think above ground is cleaner, but I cant say I like the ones that are so small they look like they're made for a rabbit. I've seen some dogs in above ground pens that didnt have room to turn around.

Sanitation! I have both, off the ground, and the traditional. I like cleaning up after my hounds that are off the ground far better than the dirt kennels. And my hounds off the ground are much cleaner. I keep my old dogs off the ground since they get run much harder.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the info!!

Also, I have been told one reason beaglers use off the ground pens is b/c beagles are prone to die from intestinal protozoans (sp?). Is this true??

When you kennel your dogs on the ground use 4" to 6" of pea gravel. Very clean for the dogs and clean up is a snap. I too do not like the small living quarters of an above ground kennel. I own 1 above ground and what ever dog is in it is always dying to get out. The dogs actions answered all my questions.

i had my dogs on dirt kennels and hated how miserable they looked after it rained. they we so messy and stinky. i moved them to an above ground pen with a roof and i havent had near the problems with ticks and fleas taht i did while they were on the ground. it keeps them out of the water and if your females are in heat it helps keep other dogs away from them. they may seem small but a 4x8 run is plenty of room for a beagle. my runs are 3x8 and they have plenty of room. i have let them run loose before and i noticed that they layed around all day anyway so i put them in a pen so they would be safer. keith

I use granite dust and have about a 6 to 12 inch base in my pens. Lime it bleach it and turn it over and rake it back out every 3 months. Stuff packs like concrete and drains well. Might have to try pea gravel to see if i like it. To each his own. Had one above ground that dogs never seemed happy in and have one 80' runner wire I change the dogs out on week by week that some dogs dogs like better than others as they are on a chain. If you happy and the dogs are healthy and happy It doesn't matter. To me it comes down to personal preferece and the effort your willing to put into your dogs.

On and off note what you guys going to do when that plastic get brittle and how does that plastic stand up to digging and chewing.
