Tight mouth

Post by wvbill »

What have you found to be the best way of loosing a dog up a little.

Solo or packed?

My one gyp is a little tight. This time of the year it is real bad. She is a excellent dog but just wont bark when all the other dogs are opening. She will run the track about another 20 - 30 feet then bark. Would like to cut that distance in half. She is very competitive and wants the front and runs there. Was hoping that her competitive nature would loosen her up with the other dogs barking before her.
It is actually funny to watch when they are in the open. The other dogs barking up a storm she is in the front not saying a word then.... YIP YIP YIP

I would settle for 2 or 3 strike alot better than last.

Most likely will loosen up with age. Soloing would be best as packing would put pressure on her.

This little one is a year and half old. So she is by far a experienced hound. Always heard the older they got the looser they got because of the confidence level.

Would like for her to do it a little sooner, though.

Incahoots,

You got time to run this evening in WV. If so, call my cell. We ran 5 last night in a little under 2 hours. Not the best place to run but there is rabbits there, when the planets are in alignment. LOL

I'll buy her, those are the kind I like. She will losen up with age. I have a 5 year ols gyp thats opening just right, when she was young she'd run a rabbit 30 yards sometimes before she opened.

Sorry guys,

It would take an act of Congress to get this one out of my kennel.

I really like this hound. This is about the only fault I have with her at this time. If you want to call it a fault. She works checks like I want a dog to work checks. She knows how to back it down when conditions get bad. She has the right tools it is just going to take time to put them all together. She can be moody at times, which drives me up the wall.

I have another female that is younger and just opens almost perfect.
But alot weaker in all the other areas.

tight mouth

Post by Gates Northern »

Hello:

all hounds have a fault somewhere. If this is here only fault you are a lucky man! Nothing worse than a mouthy one!

I would say packing is not going to loosen her up / actually will make it worse with her desire to have the front. Especially as she gets older / she is bound to notice that barking later off a check is an advantage. It doesnt sound like she is doing that yet from your desc of her.

There are two kinds of tight mouth / a cheater trying to get out from her pack mates and a natural tight one that is just extra cautious.

Running her with slower dogs she can easily beat I think would be your best bet / the competion thing in her would not be challenged but yet her desire to beat others would give her more excitement which should yeild more marking.

If thats her only fault / god bless her / I certainly could adjust to last strike if she can handle the front CORRECTLY on most all drives

goodluck
