here i am with yet another question. i have just veiwed the results of the best black and tan contest. what would a true black and tan look like cause im seein alot of black, tan and, whites up there. or even to point the matter out that the predominate color of the dog is to be listed first in the colors (i.e. black and tan, then they must be more black then tan, or if WHITE is the predominate color, then they would be WHITE, black and tan, a tri color), right or wrong? im just confused, i aint tryin to bust chops, or make anyone mad, just tryin to learn. and another thing i just remembered, the announcement which is no longer in Just Talkin Dawgs for the best black and tans had a picture of a BLACK, TAN, And WHITE dog that had less white then any of the winning dogs, but someone called it a Beautiful tri-color? ME VERY, VERY CONFUSED........

i have my female brandy in that contest and she is what i would consider a tricolor but i had seem some with markings similair to hers so i put her in. I think to be a black and tan there cant be a white hair on the dog and if there is that would be a tri..maybe i am wrong so someone correct me if im wrong...keith

I agree. If it is a black and tan there should be no white at all or a little white on the dogs chest. That is what I call a black and tan. I have heard people call certian dogs bluetick with just a few ticks around its neck and up the dogs legs. Thats my thoughts.

i thought the same thing, well i mean a little white yes but i didnt think blocks of white i thought blocks of white classified it as a black white and tan tri-color. ok so if the person that set this contest up could give an answer i would be thankful....

All beagles that are black and tan have some white on them. This is no exact science so If the dog is majority black and tan most folks will call him Black and Tan. On the AKC papers some folks will take it another step and say black tan and white.

my thoughts--- make a fist and if your dog has more white than the size of your fist then call it a tricolor. white toes (not whole feet) or a dab of white on the chest is ok, but a lot of the dogs from the contest were borderline (at best) and probably are more tricolored. it was just a contest for fun though, but thats my thoughts on "black and tan" dogs.

junior,,,,,,,,,,,,what do you consider a bluetick to look like,,,,,,,a true bluetick has no brown on it,,,,,but every one considers them bluetick,,,,if the dogs dominate color is more than 95% with just a softball size of white in its chest id consider it to be black and tan,,,,and id register it that way,,,,,,,,but this is just my opinion,,,,,

I set the contest up and I govern what's considered to be the colors for this contest because, well......somebody has to. All of the hounds that placed and all hounds submitted except maybe one or two "marginal" were Black and Tans in my book. I'd rather have the marginal hounds considered instead of eliminated. As Big Dog said, this is hardly an exact science and it isn't intended to be. If so, we would have every dog pictured under a measuring stand, with the owners showing us their teeth, lol!
Brian said it best though, this is for fun, guys. This evolved out of a thread asking why there were no blueticks in the AKC show ring. We decided to have our own online show by color and it just snowballed. There's no money involved, and the real winners are those of us who enjoy seeing all the different dogs. The placing hounds are featured in color in the magazine, and I gotta tell ya, I've had a LOT of positive response from the readers about this contest. They like to see different people's hounds, too!

I think I'm gonna do a blanket back tri, and an open-marked tri. Then we will do a best of show and best of opposite sex. Sound fun?

Sounds like a lot of fun to me! Not only that it is a great way to see each others dogs and to see different marked dogs then what most folks are used to seeing.

A Brian,
What if one guy has big hands, and another has small hands. This would throw the fist theory out.
Just kidding,

Bigdog, I assure you that there are hounds that are just black and tan. No white on them.
