i'd use the penecillan also call your vet and ask them about using a quarter of a cc of oxytocin after she is done having the pups it causes the milk to come in faster which may help her clean out that mastitis i would get the pen in her soon it is a infection

Dampen a hand towel and put it in the microwave and warm in real good. Wrap it in another hand towel, or put it in a zip lock. Make sure it is not so hot it burns. Use the hot packs a few times a day 10-15 minutes on the affected teat. Also I find that is a pain and some dogs dont like it. You can also run a warm bath and get them to soak in it. It will realieve the pressure. You dont want ulcers.
Good luck to you.
Also mix her pup chow with some water. Might eat it better that way.

Do as Samlyn says, only also throw in a hand full of Ebsom salt in the water. This will soften and also help draw out the infection. Old folks use it to draw a boil to a head, it will work...

I think my female is having the same problem. What is the correct amount of amoxicillin or penicillin to give a dog with mastitis?

Keep it flowing, or it will cake up and make it worse, drain it as soon as you can, Antibotic will work fast I'd use Amox 250mg 2x day 5 day 1st dose of double would'nt hurt.Give her Tums after birth, for calsium, 1 aday.

I agree with this dosage. Hot pack the teat with a hot wash cloth several times a day. She'll feel better after the antibiotic gets to work. It may still rupture but, she'll be ok.

What do you do if it ruptures?
Ive got one that is nursing 3 week old puppies and hers ruputured.
The vet said clean it out with peroxide and put neosporin in it but it looks like it needs more than that to me.

Tom It happens with cows alot, with bitches the teat and bag harden (rock hard),get warm-hot to the touch, best thing is treat it fast with Antibotics, keep it from clogging drain it until the warm hard goes away and the bitch is producing just milk. Ruptured is a hard one to treat, because pups are right there to mess with it, just keep it from becoming more infected, oral med, keep it clean and with time it will heal.

I'm jumping to the end here so maybe your issue is resolved. I hope so. I just went through mastitis and ended up with a huge surgical bill as amoxi doesn't do the trick. She needs to be on Cephalexin STAT!!!!!!!!!!!
You don't want to go thru what i just went through!!! Take her to the vet asap. I will post the wjole story via seperate link, when I get home later.
Good Luck
Cindy
