I was walking my beagle and a man comments on what a nice looking dog . So we start talking and he mentions he has about 20 beagles. Now I'm excited (possible hunting buddy here) and he looks under my dogs chin and says, not asks---says she's a good rabbit dog. So now I'm confused, cause she is a really good rabbit dog and I ask why he says that. He said, I swear he said, cause the mole under her chin has three hairs!!!! He thinks a mole with one hair=poor rabbit dog two hairs=better and three= best.
Anyone else heard this or similar tales??

LMAO I guess this means my Aunt Evelyn is a good rabbit dog, too.

that is the first thing a friend looked for on my pup, which has three hairs.
he told me that he is a keeper and his grandfather only kept hounds like this.

I have been told a similar thing by a man I hold in high regards as a houndsman. With a twist, he says the more moles they have the better the hound. Any hound with less than 3 moles, don't buy it or move it on down the road. I don't know, but he always has good hounds.

He also predicts and pups running style by looking at the wiskers. He says that if the wiskers are swept back ( towards the eyes ), they will run with thier head up always tyring to catch the scent high and run to catch. If the wiskers are swept forward ( towards the nose ), they'll be a heads down track hound, and if the wiskers stick straight out they'll do a little of both.
It's funny because I have watched this close with my hounds and pups and so far it hold pretty much true. Take it for what it's worth, wives tail or not, but it is interesting any way.

I have heard this many times. The best one I heard was how you could tell if A coonhound was A hard tree dog by just looking him over on the chain.

Yea I had a guytell me my male red n white dog wasnt pure bred because the roof of his mouth wasnt black He, RED N WHITE for crying out loud he doesnt have a spec of black on him even his toenails are white Oh buy the way I have his AKC pedigree all the way back to the late 70,s Sure wish he had a black mouth

The old lady has 2 growing out of hers. should i keep her or trade her off ? just kidding, I would be in the dog with the dogs.

Black in the roof of the mouth and "four eyes" (little brown spots over each eye) are two things the old time hunters looked for in a treeing dog. I picked a rat terrier out of a litter on this basis. She was the best treeing squirrel dog I have owned! My bad luck still won out though - she was the most gunshy dog I have ever owned too!
