I went out this morning to my spot that is nearest my home and took two beagles. They buried into a thick briar/honeysuckle patch and opened. and they soon had him out and running. He ran up this bluff to the top along the edge of a pasture. They headed away from me a ways, then got quiet. As I was waiting and listening, I heard a dog howl, about a hundred yards from me, in the opposite direction from where I had last heard the beagles. I at first wondered what my beagles were doing there, then I thought it was someone elses dog that was lost. Then I realized it was a coyote howling. He howled again and when it trailed off to a couple of high pitched yips there was no doubt as to its identity. I immediately started out toward the spot where I had last heard the dogs. As I approached the spot, I started calling and in a few minutes they came from the direction of a farmers barn. They had holed a rabbit there several times in the past. They appeared to be covered with dirt as if they had beeen digging. I put the leash on them and went back to the truck.
My buddy and I had seen coyote signs and tracks in the area but had not been bothered. A couple of times, further back on the property, our hounds had been interrupted by something that scared them. We both thought it was a coyote. We had been careful not to run in that area during the warm months, when vegitation prevents us from getting a good view of the hounds. Apparently the coyotes have expanded their territory.

They also should be having their puppies at this time... Take heed...

i'll tell ya what fellas...i was running two gyps the other night..and to make a long story short one came back chewed up and the other hound never did..coyotes are bad around here....there will soon be a few less they just hit my s$$t list for sure...i lost a good female to those worthless animals...be careful fellas

I was trying to turkey hunt saturday and was being followed by what I thought was a dog trying to run it kinda sounded like it was yipping several times and then a short howl after a while I noticed it wasn't trying to run but actually fowling me around so I tried to set it up to where it would cross in front of me but it never happened after about 2 hrs I guess it finally got bored and left me alone, I can't swear it was a coyote but after listening to it for a while i'm about sure it was, no turkeys either.

A guy I work with had a coyote rush him Saturday.
He was using his turkey call when he heard a noise behind him, so he looked around the tree he was sitting at and bam! A coyote was full throttle and within arms reach of him.
He said he swung at it, but missed and kicked at it as well, dropping his gun.
He wasn't sure who was more frightened......him or that coyote.
Probably the strangest looking and biggest turkey that coyote had ever seen.

The two groups of fellas in my area report that they killed close to 80 this year, right within a ten mile circle around my house. I hate these things and am not taking chances. It may sound nuts but I got a big ole English coon hound pup and she is taking real close to my beagles. I am up in the air whether to get her on coon or make her a rabbit hound to run with my beagles. I don't know how successful it would be, but as big and tough as she is already she would put it right to a coyote if it came in on her. She is fearless, smart and does not take crap from anything around this place so far. I hope she learns to hate them things as much as I do!

Gus , up here we have had coyutes come in between the rabbit and the hounds but thats not to say they wouldn't take a beagle!
Some houndsmen in the U.P. are loosing dogs to wolves as well, and I don't just mean beagles, were talking bear,cat,coon & any hound.

gus here in ohio we had our first coyote,human attack.it was on the news.the coyote attacked a man on a bike and bit the guy he called authorties,and when they came to investagate,theyote attacked again they shot and killed yote. north east ohio bmcf[ [/list]

Heard on the news tonight that the coyote had rabies.

Ya'll know which newspaper I could find the attack?

I was running my dogs yesterday at my club went I heard a few yelps. I quickly got my dog round up and pull my 762x39 out of the truck. I sliped into some camo and faded away in to the brush. I layed down a few calls and waited Nothing ... they will be back and one day i'll be waiting for them.

The coyote pups will be comeng out of the den April 20 and the old ones will be more watchful at this time and from now until they kick the pups out in the fall.Now is the time you can call them if careful. You may find the den in the area they attack your dogs, I have learned to kill coyote anyway I can. Nothing is wrong when you hunt coyotes. The best way is a spotlight at night
