Breeding Question....(NEW TO BOARD)

Hello Guys,

I bought a female a few months back who had birthed 5 pups but lost them all shortly after whelping them. Both dogs were tested before breeding by the way. She had plenty of milk and the pups seemed to be big and healthy. My question is this, as the new owner what would you suggest for me to do as far as her health goes. What all problems could have caused this to happen? Also, to combat such problem, what precautions would you suggest to take before she is bred up again.

My plans so far… From here on out she will be on INTERCEPTOR wormer, plus keeping her up to date on all vaccines. I then plan to start feeding her puppy chow once she is breed up.

Do you have any other suggestions as far has her health, increasing number of pups, and increasing the chances of pups living?

Breed on the 9th day of her heat (Day 1 is the first day of blood). Since I started breeding on the 9th day instead of the 10th day I get bigger litters. Use a heat lamp. We use a heat lamp hooked up to a thermostat. Ron Eye was the first I know who did this. The first time I did this, before I turned it on the puppies were crying. After I turned it on within a half-hour they all quieted down. They hardly fuss at all now.

Make sure you have a good whelping box so that she will not lay on the pups after they are born.

Use Milkade. We don't lose pups since using it. It takes the acid out of the milk, also I try to give the female canned milk replacer and fresh meat. I have been having good luck the last few years doing this. Dog Bloom is also a good supplement.

I would have sent a pup off to have it tested for Herpes virus. This would not necessarily show up in the dam but could be pasted to the pups. This virus goes into remission and will not show up unless active but will cause the loss of pups.

If she is carrier then you are out of luck with pups probably. I would also start on on an anibiotic just in case there is a bacterial infection going around you kennel. Would put all my hounds on it for 10 days. I did this once when I couldn't find a cause for loosing a whole litter. Haven't had the same prob since.

Check to make sure you can use interceptor on a preg hound.

OK. First off what did the vet say caused the problem ? and what do you mean next time keeping her up on all her vaccines??? How old is she? The first thing I do is make sure she is 100% healthy and vibrant All my hounds are currant with all shots and they are all on Interceptor, and we follow the vets suggestions for nutrition on individual cases no two hounds are alike in nutritional needs. Our last bitch The vet suggested puppy chow and a vitamin supplement. the bitch thats pregnant now she said the Diamond Kibble is great and she dont need supplements. If your bitch is not up to date with her vaccines, you should not have bred her. Just My

Im sorry I came off like that but, I see guys buying hounds, and just breeding just to get pups, and not caring at all about Quality breeding. You did not make it clear if she was already bred or if you did the breeding, and how old she was. Im picturing a nine month old beagle in her first heat being bred by a paser by beagle without her vaccines being up to date or even considered too young to breed. We breed after all the puppy shots are well out of the way on their third heat cycle, and have much concern over the well being of our dam and sire and especially the puppies..........................................And by the way welcome to the board
