Water Powered Kennel Silencer
Is anyone currently using a water powered kennel silencer? If so where bouts did you buy it from and how would you rate it?

I use one that is called "the hose". It work great. If the dogs don't shut up after I yell at them, I go out and turn the hydrant on and squirt the with "the hose". You do have to be dedicated to it and don't yell at them unless you plan on following up. Now all I have to do is yell "I'll get 'the hose'" and they all run in their house and shut up.

Vickie... your sarcasm is definitely appreciated. Don't know what I could do without it. However some of us work for a living and don't feel like getting up at 2 and 3 AM in the morning to go spray the dogs. Thanks for your suggestion though.
WVbill... thanks I saw theirs... Just wondering what some other folks have used in regards to that sort of contraption and whether it worked sufficiently for them.

Hi Fuzz,
I work for a living too. That's why I said you had to be dedicated. I'm getting up to that age where you really need your sleep too! My younger dogs aren't quite as well mannered as the older ones. LOL They do wonder why the older ones run for the house with their tail stuck between their legs though.
I haven't head of a kennel silencer, but it sure seems like it would work if it was noise activated. Can you set it just for barking rather than any other noise? I am curious about how it works too.

Vickie,
Sorry to get annoyed... bad day at work I suppose... I don't know about any other noises besides barking. That would be interesting. I live adjacent to an interstate and another main road. Seems like everyone is accustomed to the noises from that, but are pissed when a dog barks. Go figure. The barking doesn't bother me, it's the neighbors who could bitch for hours about it that annoys me.

Hi Fuzz,
I don't blame you for getting pissed at the neighbors. I do know that if my dogs bark, there is usually a reason. Bonnie was barking all night one night. I was too tired to go out and see what was up. She was still barking the next morning so I went out and there was a big puff adder or hog nose snake that got into one of the holes they dug. It had obviously just ate a rat or chipmonk. As soon as I got the pitchfork and picked it up and let it out of the pen, they all shut up. Poor Bonnie was quite horse by then.
At least they are down away from the neighbor's house and in the pine trees so they can't hear them very well. They do have a mutt dog on my side of the road behind their barn, not too far from my bedroom window, that starts barking at dark and doesn't quit until 1 or 2 in the morning. He does have an irritating bark. I have told them that and they say it doesn't bother them. Well go figure. It is behind a barn across the road from their house. It woundn't bother me either if that was the case for me!
Good luck trying to keep your neighbors happy!

I know I have seen someone's contraption of what you are talking about, but it was a really long time ago. It may have been on this board or BeaglesUnlimited. They had the water piped in like a sprinkler system for a commercial building. Had a noise detector attached to a solonoid (sp?), when the dogs would bark, it would trip the solonoid and water would spray for a pre-determined time.
Don't know what it would cost, but it would solve a lot of problems. Water = dogs running for cover instead of barking.

Here is a build it yourself system that might work. It is a little bit cheaper than the Waterjet Kennel Silencer.

Vickie,
Thanks for the link. I guess I could engineer something like that to spray from down over top of the kennels rather than up. Interesting I'll have to read more about it.
Larry,
Have you had it problems with it pick up sounds other than barking. For example, if I'm out in the kennels feeding and bang a pan, I wouldn't want to get sprayed... ha ha. I noticed they have one that emits a ultrasonic sound. Wonder how they one would work.
BTW, I've not forgotten about the Fish Creek Story ... I'm a procrastinator by heart, so bear with me. I'll get it to you soon.

Here is one to check out. http://pages.prodigy.net/maddux/_wsn/page3.html
Fuzz aren't you a phone technican?
I made one using a relay that was used to ring a power bell and a selinoid (sp) from an old washing machine that control the flow of water. I hooked my second phone line to the relay. The relay was wired to the seliniod. You have to supply water to the selinoid. I ran a hose from the selinoid to the dog kennel I wanted to spray. When the dog started barking I would dial up my second line, every time it rang they got sprayed. At nite all I had to was hit redial. That dog learn to hate telemarketers as much as I do. lol

I use the water system that Lion Country sells. It is activated when they bark. You can set the sensitivity on the bark unit and how long you want the sprinkler to go off.I have it center of the kennel so it will cover the entire area.It certainly helps to keep 12 dogs from making so much noise. It is certainly not a catch all but it does help.
Fuzz. you will have to turn the unit off before feeding! I DON"T forget anymore I don't like getting wet, I live in the country and have had 0 trouble with it going off except for dogs barking. I only use it with new dogs that bark, it don't take long for a dog to learn, and you can direct the water where you want it also how long you want it to spray, the level of noise can also be adjusted. I have not used the ultrasonic sound one but I know I can hear the dogs hit the box's as soon as the water comes on so maybe if you could get one that sounded like a sprinkeler it would work?? lol
Don't worry about the Fish Creek Story, I want it but I know you have more to do than getting that done.. Thank you
