Does anyone know how to make rawhide dog treats. My dogs love them but man are they expensive. I can get ahold of some moose hides this fall and was hoping I could make rawhide treats outa them.

Soak the hide in slack lime until the hair slips by pulling on it. Then nail a 2x6 6 foot long to a 2x6 thigh high with a 2x4 on the bottom to make a stand that slants downward. Take a angle iron and grind the edges so they are not so thick-- don't sharpen the edges . Then throw the hide over your freshing beam and remove the hair. Soak in water to remove lime and then cut into the size tou want twist or tie in a knot and allow to dry.

where do I find slack lime? Is that a preservative? So you just allow the hide to airdry huh? Thanks for the response.

Be carefull when giving your hounds rawhide. If the hound swallows a big peice of rawhide it can get stuck in there intestines. This can kill the hound if not detected and if detected it is very expensive to have removed.

Buddy of mine lost a Rot to raw hide. If it choked that big joker, dont seem like it would be to hard to choke a beagle. Just my 2 cents

I know of a beagle that nearly lost an eye due to infection of cut in it's mouth from rawhide. It's ok now but was in rough shape at the time.
