Has anyone seen a dog do this?

Post by Big Dog »

My kennel partner and I have an 18 month old male out of Hammrick's Mt STate Blue Jet that shows good signs as far as potential is concerned, but towards the end of the season he started acting a little crazy, At a long check he will every now and then just start howling like he is going nuts, if the dogs pick up the check he will not even hark back to them he will come to the nearest person and just stand beside them howling his head off until someone makes him stop. He doesn't do it all the time, but every now and then he will do this and I have never seen anything like it before. I don't know if he is frustrated because he can't run the front on the older dogs, or if he is just blowing up. Has anyone else ever seen a dog do this and what did you do about it. I already tried the foot in the ass, it only shuts him up doesn't solve the problem.(LOL)

Yes I've seen it, well something similar. The hound I saw left the pack, it was toward the end of the run/day, and he acted like he'd seen a ghost. He even skirted us (and his owner) and howled for a bit. He wouldn't go far from us but he couldn't stay still, either. I thought maybe a low blood sugar attack, but the owner said he'd fed him earlier in the day. I dunno what it is but my guess is it's physiological.

Me and Dad used to run Beagles on Fox a Few years ago, sometimes too much pressure caused that to happen in 2 different younger males. Ours got to where they ran a shorter time out each time until they would only run about 1 1/2 hours. That was on foxes in a 150 acre pen. Real hardcore running, in steep steep ground.
Having said all that, I havent saw that on Rabbits. I have never Busted a Pup in the daytime on rabbits. I have at night, but not gun hunting. Just not enough constant hard fast pounding.

Any chance he's running into deer scent? I've got a couple that will come back and howl when they smell a deer track.

Ted is right I have a little bitch that if she gets deer scent will sit right down like she is begging for a treat and howl in the air for some time. Then she get back out and go hunting. I don't know if she is saying I am pissed I want to run that deer but no better or what?
hounds... hare.... hunter.... bang... what gets better than that.

Keep it coming folks, Bev I had a male of mine do exactly as you described, it was as if he had seen a ghost, he wouldn't even let me catch him, another guys do did the same thing in the same area a day before and ended up running all the way to the truck and hiding under it. I wish I knew what was there. I have the feeling that it is pressure causing him to do it, but I was very careful with this pup and only ran him brace with a female his age and slower than him from the time he was 6 months until he turned a year old, we would put him down with 3 or 4 other dogs about once every 2 - 3 weeks, but he has plenty of foot. He actually stays at my kennel partners house so I told him to back off of him for awhile and just run him brace to see how he handles that. This dog has all of the tools to trial, if he can just get his head right.
He has a mouth to die for, probably the biggest loudest chop I have ever heard. I guess only time will tell. I may try feeding him in the morning before running to see if it is his blood sugar causing the problem.

Your dog is showing the first signs of blowing up. If you really like this male do more than back off a little....back of completely. 18 months old and has all the tools.....doesn't sound like he needs help.....let him do it by himself until you see the consistancy and confidence you expect in a mature hound. If your of the mind set that you need to handle a nice young hound with delicate hands, then do it now before it's too late.

Whats the dam on your male?
Once upon a time, a man asked a girl " Will you marry me?" The girl said " NO." and the guy lived happily ever after and ran his dogs as much as he wanted to.

I would agree with Chris that the dog may be blowing up. I would completely back off and lay him up for awhile.

The Dam of this female is a dog that is called Tuff E Nuff Speed, I don't have her pedigree with me but I know she goes back to some branko breeding. I am going to lay him up for a whole month and then try him some by himself.

Hey Big dog that dog is ruined .You don't need him , I hate for you to put him down so just ship him over here to me with his papers and a couple bags of dog food and I'll take him off your hands, LOL Seriouly has he been corrected for off game, I had one that would act really strange when around coyotes and have judged some that would do strange things when they crossed deer trails

I'm not sure about the first problem but we did have a couple run out of chase and act scared to death and disoriented . And I was told it sounded like a running fit, where there sugar level had dropped. Has anyone tried giving there dogs honey before a hunt???

Dog,

I have a red female that's 8 that does something similar. She is a solid dog but every once in a while she'll come out of a chase with tail tucked barking in circles as if something were chasing her. I won't breed this dog. If I'm not mistaken Josh/HDB said this was some type of seizure.

Last week in NC 3 dogs came out of the chase with tails tucked and refused to go back in.???? As the other dogs circled and brought the rabbit back, a big coyote crossed the field. Can you blame them?

It sounds like a running fit. I have seen it in dogss that run real hard and bark real fast. Something to drink sometimes helps...we also tried electrolytes solution in their water that worked fairly well. some just seem to out grow it.

I have seen dogs do this when there is a coyote in the area also. But these dog had been attack by a coyote. My sister lets her dogs out to run almost everyday but if the coyotes are moving like they have been in the last couple of days, her whole pack won't leave the yard. ONe of her hounds came in with a bite mark on her leg this week. She has lost 2 hounds to coyotes. They have killed 7 coyotes back behind her house in the last couple of months.
