Pups start just fine in snow if that is the question.I prefer to start them in snow because most of my hunting is done in snow.
Now if you rarely have snow is it a good idea?I can't see it hurting anything.IMHO
Dogs I have started on snow run on sod just fine.

I haven't had any problems. I have a 6 month old male and a 5 month old male both are blueticks. There is about 1/2 inch of snow on the ground right now and both pups opened on track this week. That 5 month old pup really impressed me.

I really enjoy starting a pup on snow. Then when spring comes, he'll just explode with the delights of strong scent. When winter rolls around again, you'll have a hound ready to run and gun on snow (if he can't run on snow the second year, better give him away as a pet).
