they had run about 13 miles then with very few checks- dogs aint much good but the scent was good
he left about 3 seconds before dogs got there-- and they were coming over and under some blowdowns- i dont think ive seen one lick his feet with dogs that close before-

I would think licking his feet would produce more scent. Are you sure that old hare was not licking his feet because they were getting sore, from the good chase the dogs were giving him?

i like that idea fatboy--

not sure its true but sounds good -
i think butch had it right----too far ahead is when they normally stop to groom themselves -- the scent was awful good that day and that hare was pressured a little--- he went into road running mode soon after-- i dont want dogs to hurt them but i like to irritate them just a little

I think you've got it right. Some mornings I don't always have time for a shower but always have time to wash my face, unless someones yelling FIRE! lol
The hare had gauged the pace of the hounds and was under no real threat, so she felt she had the leisure time for a quick face-wash. No one was closing the gap coming on hard from behind yelling Fire!
