Made a bad mistake this morning! What would you do?

Post by Chris D Adkins »

I have a pair of litter mates! My female was 20 days into her heat cycle and less than a year old and I decided that I would go ahead and run her this morning (bad mistake)!! I have always cheated it a day or two just to get them back on the ground and have never had a problem doing that til today! Her littermate brother ended up getting locked up with her about 2 hrs into our run this morning!

Depends on what you want to do in regards to pups.
You can let her have and raise the pups and see what they turn out like??
If you don't want to raise the pups or are afraid of the outcome.......... euthanize them as soon as the female has finished having them.
Restrict the female's food and water intake over the next several days and her milk production which at that point hasn't really got started will dry right up.
Some may think that's hard core, but you asked.
I absolutely would NOT get a so called "mis-mate" shot as they can cause more trouble than they are worth.A lot of vets. won't even give them anymore.

Are they both good rabbit dogs with traits you want and complient each other . Do you know and like the hounds that are behind them , sire, g-sire , dam and back ? Any issue's there . If all that's good keep'm , pick a couple and give the others away 1st choice . I'm with Dana no shot whatever u do . JMHO

I messed around deciding which male to use on Bunny this time and it was the last week of her cycle when I put her in with Rascal. She had a false pregnancy with no pups so I guess she had already flushed the eggs out by the time i made up my mind.
If it's the 20th day of her cycle, there's a good chance yours will have done the same, so don't be to worried...jmho...Bunny was dried up tight in a couple weeks, so milk will stop if not being drawn down by pups.

Appreciate the advice! Both parents of the pups are nice dogs and both the pups are doing a really nice job for there age! They won't be a year old til the 14th of this month! It's the last thing I had planned to do but I'm like you guys I will not give the shot! I just didn't know if anyone else had ever had this happen! I guess I learned a lesson the hard way this morning! All I can do now is sit back and see what happens

This is just my opinion. Less than a year old is too young for a dog to raise a litter of pups. Hell they are still pups themselves. I learnd from my dad many years ago that a dog should not be bred until they are 2 years old and have proven themselves. He raised trained and shipped champion Brittanies and Weimaraners all over the midwest until the pheasant population dwindled. I use his philosophy in my kennel to this day.
I understand that this was an accidental breeding and those things happen. My dad had 2 accidental breedings at his kennel,
He called them bucket puppies and we never saw them nor did his clients.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thirty years ago my bitch got loose and a man called from about a mile away to say he had her and she was with a male of another breed. Vet gave her a morning after pill. No litter. Your choice.

Many things have changed in 30 yrs. I have an 8 year old female who was the product of an accidental father/daughter cross. A friend of mine owned both parents and tried to get 3 different vets to abort the litter. They all declined stating the risk of complications to the future health and welfare of the bitch far out weighed the inconvenience. They pointedly told hm to let her have the pups and euthanize them at birth. He chose to raise them and sold all 4 at weaning for just his cost of raising them. Because I knew the dogs behind them well and had a good idea what to expect I ended up taking one. I was not sorry I did. In the 39 yrs. I've had hounds, she turned out to be one of the two best snow hounds on hare I've ever owned. She has had some health issues that kept me from raising pups from her but as far as an every day hunting dog she may well be the only dog I've ever had that has never had a day since she was 8 mos. old that she couldn't bring a hare around to the gun. Some days it wasn't spectacular but never a day she couldn't get it done at least one circle.

Good story. It's amazing how your good ones turned out and how blessed we are to have them for a short while. My alpha male has been gone for 1.5 yrs. and I still miss him. Hopefully the original poster's story will help someone down the rode.
