Show Beagles qualify in Hunt Test!!

Post by Honey Pot Hounds »

Hi Everyone -
Woo hooo! These ladies are to be commended
for wanting to do it ALL with our little show beagles. So here are the 12/4
results of the Hunt test from Carol McElroy in her words, I will edit only to
put in names so everyone knows whom we are referring to:

<<Yesterday Susan A (Armstrong), Jan (Weiher) and I (Carol
McElroy)participated in our first Hunt test. It was put on by the Basset Hound Club and
included beagles, bassets, daschunds and PBGVs.

Susan (Armstrong) had "Charm" (Lo-Del's Charm of LT as I recall) entered in
solo, and I had "Oliver"( CH.Windsong TriplePlay) in solo, too. Jan (Weiher)
had "Echo"(CH.Echo Run Hare Raiser ) and "Hootie" (Echo Run Hoot N' Holler) in
brace. All four hounds qualified! The bad thing is we thought that AKC was
going to eventually sanction this type of hunt test and grandfather any titles
we earned in, but we learned yesterday that is not the case. It turns out it
will be just an award-like CGC, which is not a title.

Oliver got on a rabbit immediately, gave chase with good voice, and ran the
rabbit to a brush pile. The judges said they had already graded him and left
me the choice as to whether I would keep running him or not. I got the
impression they were ready to move on to the next hound, so I picked him up. Turns
out it was good enough for first place among the beagles, and he got a perfect
score of 10 on giving voice. So much for show dogs having the voice bred out
of them!

Charm did very well considering how little time she has spent in the field,
and Jan's Echo and Hootie turned in a beautiful brace run. They worked as one,
and if not for a fast acting judge would have been dining on rabbit! ""

CONGRATULATIONS LADIES !!! We're very proud of all of you !!

;) Phew! I figured out how to fix the size of our picture!!
Pappy, thankyou very much for your compliments on my bitch. She is as sweet as she is pretty. But she is not one of the qualifying Field Beagles mentioned above....at least not yet. Right now we are sticking to the show ring and planning a breeding with her. She does run our land daily and I have no doubts she could make a good hunting dog but that's not in the cards for her at this time.

ALLRIGHT CINDY Glad to see you on here I been tryin to tell folks for years that Show dogs Can Run Rabbits to!!!! LOL
After all Aint that what they are bred for????
I do Agree With AKCs desision to just have the tracking as a Award and not a Hunting title, This of Course is just my opinion Just cause they Can Sent em Dont mean They can hunt em.
A true test of the hunting title Comes from Being able to do it consistantly Day after day for hrs on end.
Again CONGRATS And A JOB WELL DONE!!!!!!!
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be

TC,
You have a very nice looking Beagle in your picture. It is so nice to see a field Beagler who can stack a dog!!!!!! That dog looks like a show Champion.
All the best,
Cindy

I have no idea if those particular Beagles have ever had a rabbit shot near them....but I am sure they would stand just as much a chance of being good gun dogs as any good Beagle with the same training. There is a lot of focus on temperment and socialization with the show Beagles. We want confident dogs that can deal with loud show sites which house hundreds of other dogs and people and have loud equipement set up everywhere such as blowdryers and vacumes. Our show dogs need to go into the ring in the midst of all this with their tail up and their carriage confident and proud. No sckulking hound with his tail between his legs and his back all roached is going to win in the show ring so I feel that with the proper training these Beagles would be as good under fire as any.

Also, the gait in the ring needs to be as correct movement-wise as possible. Clean up and back, level topline and good side gait going around with reach and drive. This is VERY important in our show Beagles. An insecure hound will not stand a chance of competing successfully.

I hated to see the final post on this thread be negative. Some like them fast. Some like them slow. Some like them beautiful. That is why each breeds what they breed. Congratulations. I like my hunting beagles as pretty as I can breed them. I see them as much as I listen to them. Why should they be hard on my eyes?

Hi James,
I hope you weren't refering to my last post as negative (and I don't think you were) because I try to appreciate the best in hunting and show Beagles.
I know that I like my Beagles to be as fit and hardy as if they were working the fields and woods. They are sitting on their pretty haunches right now out there in the kennel enjoying a brisk winter day. They are not pansie's and because we have such harsh winters here I have them out as much as possible in case someday they need those survival skills..... I also believe that because my Beagles get to run so much (2.5 acres) they have an edge in the show ring.............
I sure agree with you on the eye candy part too. I know I look at my Beagles all the time and I prefer to see with more pleasure than pain.

Thats a nice lookin dog you got there. who cares if it runs a rabbit. I have 15 beagles 8 pups i havent started and the rest run rabbits except the house beagle we have who we dont care if they do. Running your beagles there should be nice for the show isnt it doesnt it put the mussle into the dogs that is needed in the show isnt it.
