Joey,

It's possible the vet wanted him eating this canned food for a reason. Check the ingredients to see if there's anything special in it. There might be some type of medication in it. Or maybe higher protien than normal.

Just a thought.........

I think it says balanced diet on it. I'll keep giving it to him. I guess its so it don't upset his stomach I'm not sure.

Joey, Glad to hear Pistol is doing better. Ever sense I was a kid I was told "get them to eating and they will keep kicking". Every sick dog that I had, as soon as they started eating it was not long until they where getting better. And if they would not eat, we would shoot Gatorade down they're throat. Never lost a dog until 3 years ago, and she had cancer. Just thought I would share that to give you a little peace of mind. Hope this helps.

hey joey get you a broiler chicken and boil it off the bone then mix in some plain white rice and bring it to a boil and feed him all he wants it is way better for him than any can food or dry food you can give him and it is easy on his stomach and will give him energy to fight whatever is in his system also he will get the liquid off of the rice and chicken so he wont dehydrate I had a female that got something last year from a tick bite but the vet could not figure it out so I went to an old horse doctor and that is what he prescribed she was back on her feet in about 4 days and also be sure not to put anything in your chicken and rice soup no spices or salt just water, chicken, and rice make a big pot so you can feed him whenever he wants it.good luck with pistol its hard to loose one like that.

I had a dog that wouldn't eat when I brought it home, he would barely eat cooked chicken out of my hand. Hot dogs, dogs love 'em. it was the only thing I could get the dog to eat for 3 days.

I've given my dogs cottage cheese or yogurt when they've not felt right- seems to help their digestive sysem.
Glad to see he's home & doing better!

I need some suggestions on what I can feed him other than that nasty cat food in a can. I don't like it its messy it stinks and I don't think Pistol likes it anyhow. I need to come up with a better bedding deal too. I need to somehow contain him so he don't go off and poo a few feet away. He actually somehow got up and poo'd about 4 ft where his bed is. How I have no idea.
Sausage balls, put his medicine in small sausage and roll them into little balls he can swallow. Keep his quart of sugar water(karo syrup) were he can get to it, it will keep his energy up and keep from dehydration.

Expandable child gates should make him a little pen to contain and allow him to move around what he will, he don't want to poo in his bed area and it's good for him to move around to keep digestion working and help clear his lungs.

You got to be willing to take care of him like he was a puppy again, he's pretty helpless right now...it's alot of work, makes you want to hire a nurse... ;)

My son does this sometimes with his redbone coonhounds. It does stretch your dog food bill farther! I don't know how nutritionally sound it is for a long term diet. I also wonder if there is any pork trimmings mixed in.

Update Nov.23 2009

I would like to thank everyone who has watched this thread and has commented on it and with out all you guys I wouldn't have been able to pull it off.

Saturday the 21st I had Pistol Standing on his feet with my help. We've been having nice weather bright and sunny so I was setting out a big blanket for him and letting him get some sun. Which I think helped out alot. Then I'd take him inside. I built him a nice big pen to stick him in and I filled it with cedar shavings that I picked up at the store. For easy clean up of urine and stool. It worked out great.

Sunday the 22nd I set him outside again and he took off walking.....lol He stubles around like a drunk guy but he was walking around. He even tried to run a little. He was stumbling around and looking around and sniffing everything raising his leg to pee and all the normal things beagles do.

This morning I let him out to walk around and his is still stumbling around but walks around and tries to run. he still seems weak and he still looks skinny.

He Does NOT WANT TO EAT on his own. I still am feeding the canned food. I spoke to the vet he told me to feed him that and only that I said yes sir I will. It is a very rich food and he needs that to recover. So i've been feeding 4 cans per day. I have to roll it into a tiny ball and toss it to the back of his throat and he eats it. He won't on his own. But when I toss it in he eats it up and licks his lips. Not sure how much longer till he tries on his own But I"ll keep tossing it in for how ever long it takes.

He Does NOT WANT TO DRINK either. I have to use a syringe suck up 12ml of water and shoot it down his throat slowly. I don't even know how much to give him. I Do a few syringe fulls after I get done feeding him. He just don't want anything to do with drinking water on his own. He did before when I first took him home he drank on his own now NO NO NO he dont want any....lol

I have seen major progress over the weekend we'll see how he is in a month then I'll let him chase a bunny see what happens.
