You have hit on a point that most wouldn't admit too I think...both of my better nosed hounds WILL cold trail on good scent days a LITTLE...I don't think its a given that if you have a powerfully nosed hound that it MUST cold trail, but mine do. But within the pack we run we have hounds that do NOT coldtrail and the pack works great on those days too. Personally I don't mind a dog cold trailing a little bit, PROVIDED they jump the rabbits they are cold trailing. Here in Michigan though I have found that balance betwen good scent days and snowy crap to lean WAAAAAY towards the snowy stuff more often than not.

I have ran with enough to know what comes with it, for the most part anyway, And I am not spending a ton of money on nose power to not like the outcome of it, I agree not all good/cold nosed hounds will cold trail, but I am not going to go through a bunch of hounds to find 1, I will run what I have now, I would rather sit at home on those nasty cold days then to go out for hrs to get 1 up to run, on all those nasty cold days the rabbits hold tight or are in holes anyway, not worth 3-4 hrs of uncomfortable weather for 1-2 rabbits, jmo
Now let me add I do get some rabbits on these nasty/cold days but not the races I am looking for in the meantime, the hounds I have now are not big nosed hounds but they will get a few around on them nasty days just not enough for me to sweat going out in it, I do run the hounds on these days for exercise for them but only 1hr or so a day and on my own property which there are few rabbits
Took the advice of many that said cut the pack to 1 or 2 hounds at a time, We ran my female solo last night and it was a little choppy put she did well, she got 3 circles before it ended (I assume a loss), Then we ran my partners female she ran 1 solo but it holed up after the first circle, Then we ran the 2 together today and they did a good job together, jumped 3 , ran 3, shot 2, not a bad day at all for the condition's and wind, My female is now my cold weather/bad scenting day's hound and she will be soloed alot on these type days, I never had the heart to only take 1 hound and leave the other home, but it turns out this is what I have to do, Thanks for all the help everyone, Scott
I ran GRHBCH RABBIT RIDGE BIG TUNA ,HBCH RABBIT RIDGE STELLA ,AND RABBIT RIDGE SMOKE today they jumped and ran a rabbit for 21/2 hours this morning with a few hard checks .The bunny was doubling back and taking wide circles ,I was hunting by myself and everytime Id move it would cross back 40 yards from me .I was really impressed with the hounds work I was in a large creek bottom with briars and could see way off .Ole Tuna wasnt letting the bunny trick him with doubling back he walked it back and drifted the track till he had him going again ,Stella and Smoke looked awesome also .This was in about 4 inches of powdery snow and about 25 degrees ,they ran the guts out of him I loved every minute of it .I left this one for another day and bagged a bunny in another location .Hope you all had some fine runs today .

Same as here 26-27 degrees, 15 mph wind and powdery snow with some areas w/hard crunchy snow, all in all I am pleased with how they ran today, will be out tomorrow morning to run my female solo
where i live in wv the snow has a hard crust on top of it i van walk on it in most places n it wont break through, havent had the dogs out the whole month of dec they know what to do when i do get them back out just like riding a bycycle jb
RunninHard, after you solo your hound a few times and it is clear she can run on powdery conditions, ( maybe not great but can run one) Then comes time to actually get her some help. If you have access to a good snow hound that has a natural speed that is less than your hounds speed and won't try to speed up to outdo your hound, run them together. Your hound won't be pushed, which is almost like running her solo. but she will be kept on the track much more with the slower snow hound keeping her on the line. She will learn from this hound, she will learn more from actual run time also. The chase will also be much more bearable to you, and your hound will still be learning.
We have been pounding around here.. Have been running from 2 to 3 dogs at a time and they have just been on fire..I am pretty shocked though cuz the snow does suck..

Soloed my hounds yesterday and they are WAY better soloed on the powdery snow then they are when ran together, I believe after watching them run together that they are both fighting for the lead, So I will solo both from now on when the conditions are bad, female ran 2 yesterday, male ran 1, 1 to a hole and 2 in the freezer..... .... Never thought that soloing would be better, I am learning more everyday, thanks to all that helped with their post, going out today to run some more, I celebrated Christmas yesterday with the WHOLE family so I have today all to myself, the hounds will get ran and have a nice warm cooked venison liver for their Christmas dinner tonight .... Merry Christmas to all the beaglers out there
Ran my female solo again yesterday and she jumped 2, ran 1, caught 1 on the jump from a brush pile, she had it by the time it got 15 ft from her
Im starting to like this solo running .... ......She is only 1 1/2 yrs old ...
