I've had some drop out to run their own rabbit before. I've seen a hound drop out of a terribly faulty pack to run his own rabbit. And I've seen a pack of my own hounds drop out of a run because the lead hound simply left nothing for them to do, They were just along for the ride and knew it and dropped out I guess to get some of there own work in on a line. They were terribly outclassed.

The hound that outclassed them was the best hunting hound I've ever seen. She outclassed many hounds from different lines. She was also my hound and L.I. Bred.

Little Ireland

JOE: “Gus I can well imagine how mad Tom was with you when you put that hound down and I would wager that your L.I. days were over whether you liked it or not.”

Joe your imagination is flawed. Tom sold me two more hounds. One I gave to a neighbor, the other. I sent back to Little Ireland. (I never said that I was a quick learner.) Actually he was more upset with me for sending back the dog than putting down Bebe. Tom wrote a letter indicating his disappointment. Not in the fact that I returned the hound, returning hounds was in his advertising contract, but in the method in which I returned her. I sent her back with a friend that was visiting Mandy Chronin.

JOE: “When a person shows such low regard of a hound as to kill them because they have become too old to serve them it shows a tendancy of disdain for the hounds which will definantly effect the persons ability to properly train hounds and get the most from them.”

That is your opinion. The bitch had not given me years of service. I bought her for one purpose, to try and produce another Chip. Maybe you have an unlimited supply of money and time to experiment. I had a young family at the time and had to make a decision where to best spend my resources. My two young boys were of a higher priority.
What is your opinion of a breeder selling a family pet when she gets too old to be of use as a brood bitch?

JOE: The idea that the hound was too old to have pups may or may not be correct. You don't say how old she was. It could well be that there was some other problem involved that was correctable. I once got a 12 year old L.I. bitch for the express purpose of trying to get a pup from her. We did get one from her too and then retired her.”

I am well aware that there is no definite age at which a bitch becomes barren. If you will check the records, Little Irelands Bridgit was given to Mandy Chronin at about ten years on age, as a puppy starter. She was accidentally bred by Ch Chilly Brooks Morning Glory and produced Bedlam Boomer. Tom indicated to me that he was highly disappointed that the mating took place and would not have let Bridget go if he had known. However, Boomer was used by Little Ireland quite successfully to clean up some of the problems that have been noted in earlier posts.

This is my last post concernig this matter. I have tried to tell the facts according to my recollections, of conversations with, and letters by Tom Dornin. I don't have any ill feelings towards the Dornins. He and his wife Velta always treated me with respect and I enjoyed talking beagles with him, as I do with any other beagler dedicated to the sport. I just was not successful when using Little Ireland for breeding stock. Obviously he had a positive impact on many beaglers.

Gus: then I stand corrected on Tom's reaction.

On killing the bitch: That is my oppinion. When one purchases an older hound they know going into it what is ahead.

You never indicated the reason for the old girl not being able to deliver live pups. If you got a eason from a vet or not is not known to me. You never gave her age either but it should be clear that her age may or may not have been the reason for her failure and unless she were checked by a vet there is no way to know.

Incidentally Gus. I hope I haven't offended you I can be a bit abrasive at times even when I don't intend to be. I've enjoyed your posts. I don't doubt you for an instant. Keep on posting.
