Well I just counldn't stay out of this discussion. RabbitEarl nailed it. I believe most beaglers have never seen a true jumpdog as Rabbit Earl described. I had one many years ago. 4 guys all drop their best hounds, at the end of the day 20 rabbits were jumped and one dog accounted for 16 of them. That's a jump dog. Diamond has some of those qualities and so does his sister, Rocket (she is also the fastest hound I've ever owned). When Rocket was 6 months old I was carrying her out of the starting pen and she started to scream and jumped out of my arms. She ran 10 feet into the brush and out came a rabbit. She winded it from 15 feet away. Years ago, I was standing at the end of a ditch filled with multifloria rose and out in the cow pasture were some isolated bushes with the grass grazed down to a lawn. My best ever jump dog (Trouble) came running over to me, stop near the rose bush and took a crap. While on point, she started to scream, the other hounds came running, but said nothing. She finished her business and circled the 10' diameter bush and went in. Seconds later the pack had a sight chase and she was left behind in the multifloria rose bush. The pack knew when she squelled it meant rabbit. Any hunter that owns one of these rare hounds would never sell it unless they were done hunting for life. I smile when I see ads asking to buy one. She made it look easy and it had nothing to do with hunt. Hunt and jump are 2 different things. I have a Ranger Dan male that has hunt, tons of hunt. I've talked to several trialers that trial certain bloodlines but hunt over Ranger Dan's, including me (many trials don't promote hunt, but that's a different discussion). There hasn't been a briar bush invented that he won't dismantle from stem to stern and he jumps alot of rabbits. I call him a "blue collar" jump dog, because he has to work at it. He jumps more than his share, alot more. The thicker the brush the better he will look. If you invited me to hunt with you and bring only one dog it would be Boomer.

I've had several "blue collar" jump dogs in 50 years of beagling, but ownly one true jump dog as RabbitEarl described.

I have seen 2 jump dogs in my life..what I would call jump dogs! I've been rabbit hunting since I was 13 years old.1 Is Candy and the other is Pepper they could jump a rabbit when other could'nt.There is a male dog that Humpy Sumner owns that I may would call a jump dog, I have only seen him a couple of times, but he has jumped a lot of rabbits. His name is Chop and he is double High Jumper bread which is double Samson. Most of these dogs on this topic I probaly would'nt call A jump dog!in my opinion!!Some dogs jump more than others, but A true jump dog is Far and Few between!!!!!!Alot of people call my Daisy dog a jump dog, but let me telll ya I've seen a Jump Dog and she is no jump dog.Pepper is owned by James Whisman she is about 7 years old,Candy was owned by me, they are hard to find. Not saying there are not Jump DOGS OUT THERE, but until U have seen ONE you may see it a little different.

A friend of mine went hunting with Jim Lane over a week ago and they jumped 9 rabbits and Jims’s Dingus male jumped 7 of those rabbits. Opening day me and two others went with Jim and we jumped 13 rabbits and with 4 other dogs, Jim’s Dingus male jumped 9 of those. A few of us over the summer would go with Jim and sometimes we would jump anywhere from 6 to 10 rabbits if we ran all day. Every time, any time or any where Jim’s Dingus male always jumps 90% of the rabbits with any dog that he is put down with. And some of those days in the summer it was hot and dry and I wouldn’t blame the dogs if they didn’t hunt at all, but that male was right in the middle of it jumping rabbits when the others wouldn’t. He even has the luck of catching rabbits from time to time. If you watch that male hunt, its like he is out there saying to himself “if I were a rabbit, where would I be”. I asked Jim what he did to get that dog able to jump rabbits like that and Jim just looked at me and told me that the dog had good hunt like the rest except Dingus was “rabbit wise” and sound between the ears, and that you only get one of those once out of every 20 litters if your lucky.

Can anybody tell me exactly what { “rabbit wise” and sound between the ears } really means?

Its Hard for me to understand were hunters would say>I would not have a true jump dog if it could not run the rabbit.Man I would take one over the best track dog anytime. There nothing like watching a jump dog winded that rabbit were other dogs has gone by it and then its looking at it.

Rabbit wise or rabbit smart just means that they know where to look. They don't just hunt everything, they're selective. They hunt where they know the rabbits are. I've seen dogs in the snow run tracks rather than scent when scenting is tough, that to me is rabbit wise.

Man that always makes me mad when they kept on drumming a rabbit dont it u eddie? Junies the same i have seen him jump one right after another,Once he jumped it dogs played hell taking it from him.He is the best jump dog i have ever owned and stays close to me to do it. I dread the day when he is gone, Bobby Vest owned a dog called Max he was the best male i have ever seen but tight mouthed bout the time he got to given his mouth just right he dis -appeared. Bobby aint been right since. I dont remeber exactly how he was bred but i think it was off northway spur.

That's funny aboutthe daschund. I had a friend that had one that could run a rabbit as good as any dog I have ever seen. The only bad thing was it would never open on track.
