Funny all the talk of what abuse and cruelty is, how bout keeping a hound penned up so much it goes nuts barking and THEN de-barking him/her to add to the dogs frustration. To each their own I guess.

Whoa!!! how do you know how I keep my dogs? They are not in runs but, have a full 1/2 acre of grass to run in EVERY day!! My dogs are Definately not bored with their lives. We don't all have the luxury of owning acres and acres of land to run dogs on however, I am forced to abide by the laws here and keeping dogs quiet (noise ordinance) is part of that.

You're right, I apologize, I don't know how you keep your dogs and I'm not familiar with your situation. Perhaps you yourself could explain why you think they bark persistently?

Not all my beagles bark persistently..actually most of them are barking at each other during play or at cats or neighbor dogs etc. MOST of them listen when I tell them to "SHUT UP" but, there are those few who decide that its a MUST to bark to the extent that it disturbs me and my neighbors. I have one right now that seems to think that she needs to bark at the wind and every leaf that blows by. She is NOT de-barked. I try not to do it unless its my very last resort. Beagles are vocal by nature, some more some less and some just have BIG loud voices.

I have read about several hunters on these boards who had a lot of trouble with barking dogs. I assume they resort to bark collars. I don't do that because the few I had were chewed off by the rest ;-)

They get that too but, its impossible to do from the house the way we are set up. If I'm at the kennel or in the yard they GET IT!! LOL

That's okay, one of mine has learned to GO INTO THE BOX and BARK ! LOL!! The hose works quite nicely but you usually have to get them while they're young so they have the fear.
A shock collar may work but if it's a field hound, I'd hate to ruin it because you want them to bark.
I have 3 and am allowed 2 in the city..... can't wait until I move to the country next month but I still intend to have the hose in shooting range :)

I know this may sound a little rough and I have never had to use it but someone told me one time to get a milk jug and put some little rocks or beans in it where it would make a noise if ya shook it. Then when the dogs start barking at night go out there and sort of wack em with it a couple of times and make them go in the dog house. After doing this a couple of times all you need to do is open the door and yell while shaking the jug. NOt sure if it would work but who knows.

I have a sprinkler system set up in my kennel. All I have to do is step outside and plug in the pump and the dogs hit the house. What I want to do is put a switch right by my bed and when they start barking all I have to do is flip the switch there ;)

barking

Post by tiffinis »

Guy who invents that is gonna make some money. If they can make a collar do it, surely then you should be able to rig it up to the timer on a sprinkler system... hmmmmmmmmmmm.

I have a lab that I have threatened with duct tape more then once. He is just pretty sure that his job in life since we rescued him is to protect us from, every car that goes up the road, the bird flying thru the yard, the wind when it blows, lifeflight helicopter everytime it flies over our house... etc etc. Funny thing is, he doesnt bark at anything when he is outside. DUH. But when my chocolate barks, you better get up and see what the heck is going on. They all know I dont like barking in the house.

Beagles Bark...Especially barking on track...It is part of their job and an essential quailty of the breed. Beagle voices can be inherited and field people have preferences...Chop, Bawl, squeal, head down chop...and part of a value of a hunting beagle is the quality of his voice.
With that said, an all due respect to the show folks(I am one), Debarking makes no sense to me...I inquire as to a dogs voice when selecting a stud dog...be it show or field..Because the bark is the Beagle! the noisiest thing in our kennel has been my male Brittanys....with the help of a tritronics bark collar and the water hose we have very little barking from our 20 plus beagles. And if in order to keep Beagles one needs to debark...does that help the breed?
