AKC Brace dogs then were not as slow and close as brace dogs today, sorta like Southern SPO or UBGF dogs I see around here. There are folks around here that gun hunt with them and they can run a Big Canecutter just fine and with much smaller circles too. Mel Foust has some and I've seen his on National TV doing it. Do they have those trials up north today and can they run a Hare? I don't know, but bet they could.
Look close at the pictures of Champions Thornie posted on here. Lots from up North. Liked the info on the Concord dogs too, thanks Thornie.
Jimmie when you brought Pete to your table, those Champion Concord dogs came along too. Not too bad a lineage down to your dogs.
In order for your Pete or any other dog to become IFC you had to compete with those little 12 inch something, USA dogs in the pictures and become a Champion here too as well as Canada. I doubt if any Champion whose picture is shown won every cast or trial so some of those dogs shown probably beat your Pete at some time. If he ran off and left them he would have not of made AKC Champion.
Read what is said in the ads with the pictures and see "line straddling, close on checks, etc. is stressed. Brace today is much better at both.
Can you imagine the AKC registered NKC LP Champion dogs you have bred up today running against those AKC Champion dogs from then? Those Champions wouldn't know where your dog went! That was my original point, and no malice meant.
Just a comment from channel 78 the history channel as my sons like to say.
If you want to hear about some tall, straight legged, fast footed, 40-50's dogs that did run back then like your dogs today, let me tell you about a lot of grade dogs I'll never forget that are in the lineage of many of the NKC, ARHA winners today!

Guys I have noticed most of the dogs you all have mentioned are dogs from aways back.
Here is a thot I have had on this while watching this post, I would have hoped we would have come along ways since dogs like Mt.Zion Pete, Jack of all Trades and so on with the dogs we are breeding now days.
I would like to think that those dogs couldnt even run with the dogs we are breeding and raising now days, with the most of them being dead and gone thats something that we will never know I guess, but according to most we should be bettering the beagle breed not trying to recreate it.
Just my thots, not that they are right.

Chief i agree, thats why i would take my female-Perkins Run & Gun Sable(present) which is strong northway Spur breeding, back to IFC Mt Zion Pete(past) which i consider the foundation of the Northway Spur hounds. This would secure the qualities i like in my hounds for the((((((((FUTURE))))))))

Everybody wants to be dale earnhart and richard petty. No one has captured the glory or presitege. Jr cant and kyle cares less. Did they have the genes? I belive half of em anyway. Same with dogs kinda , even though Mt zion pete has been dead for 40 years plus and without first hand knowledge of ever laying eyes on him , people flocked to see him go. Was pete or jack great? must of been look at pedigrees and find one that doesnt contain there blood. Records are made to be broken from mantle to petty , so if pete or jack were that great i want to capture every ounce of greatness they had. The only way i know to do it is by line breeding and trial and error. And no crew chief i aint no puppy mill last litter i rasied was about 3 years ago.

GOOD DISCUSSION,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I KNOW ONE REASON SOME OF US STICK WITH THE OLDER CROSSES,IS THEY WORK.THE PROOF IS OUT THERE,----WAY-- TO MANY PEOPLE BREEDING TO THESE ONE SHOT WONDERS ,,LIKE OLE SO AND SO,, MADE-- CHAMPION-- THE PUPS WILL SELL GOOD SO I WILL BREED TO HIM NO MATTER IF HE IS BRED RIGHT OR NOT.AND NEW BEAGLERS BEING INFLUENCED BY THESE TITLES..
KEEP'EM RUNNING

I've read a lot of input on crosses they would like to see, but its mostly about stud dogs of the past. Now lets throw in a little future.
(1) What are some of the stud dogs, you would breed to now that have the qualities of the studs you liked in the past.
(2) Why do we always forget the females? Tell me about your female and how you select the male to breed her to. Is it linebreeding, inbreeding, hunt and search, or is it the quailities of the male and female, that compliment each other?
I will even start it off. The female I bred is a grandaughter of RTK Sean V's Ace topside and gay. The bottom side of her pedigree gr grandaughter of Ole Bad Cliff and gay. The sire is my male dog, grandson of Ole Bad Cliff and Woodeye's riverside annie, his bottom side is grandsire Southside red dog runnin ring and Hollywoods Molly. The female was used for a brood bitch and was never in a hunt. She has some quricks that you probably wouldn't put up with, but when I ran her with my male, she sure knew how to run mister rabbit. Now did I do wrong in my breeding process, to some you might say yes, but i won't know until next year. She had only 2 pups. I have broad shoulders and any opions or comments are welcome.

Thornie you bring valid points , My female line up is as follows, daughter of Iron eagle-cody sharps starr, direct sister of my male= Junie= In a tight second place is mapel valley retta= Grand daughter of chimer , which is primetimes brother =jack pot on top, Lumberjack bottom= I have liked the crosses with northway-branko= back to northway= Foot and line control. The jury is out on cross three shes a pup . Junie - kelly girl, Northway- northway, shot of t-rex. She will be bred to nasty- Northway - northway . Back to junie. 5 crosses of dogs . That will probaly take me the next 10-12 years to line it out . I hopefully have made my crosses idiot proof. Time will tell . Will all future crosses be trial dogs ?
Should be . Will they be hunting machines? I will venture to say most defintley. Will they please me ? They better. Good luck with all you
