A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
I watched him run while he was in the MW....no doubt he was impressive when he was on.
I tried a few directly out of Reggie and never really found the "punch" I was looking for and they seemed to get lost in the pack....I have judged several out of Reggie that had this fire/flash but I could never find it so I moved on....let's call it the "WOW!!" factor.
I just bred my female (IFC Shooter x NLPC FC Big Spring) to my dads male (IFC Reggie x FC Smiths Bonny Lou) and got 6 pups....good things are happening crossing Paycheck with Ninja blood and Shooter/Dan with Ninja blood....I already know what Bonny Lou/Superdog brings to the table. My dads male is on what most would consider the conservative side of running and he does not have the "WOW" factor but is probably the most intelligent beagle I have been around and absolutely hates rabbits....I am hoping Singers blood adds that "WOW" that makes a good hound a great hound.
We will see...not going to get much more reproducing power than the grandparents....it could all mesh, or blow up in my face. I know several who are scratching their heads at my stud choice but I still think Reggie's BLOOD brings a lot to the table when crossed correctly. Again, they might all end up as dud's...who knows

Don't know what Terry McBride said about Reggie.I did talk with Terry when Pete Young sent his littermate brother [F.C. Turbo Charged Thunder Blue] up to him to be trialed in Canada.
And you are absolutely right about Terry telling you how it is about a hound.Terry told me that Thunder did not do that well in the Large Pack Trials held on snow.Don't know the particulars about why he didn't;got rattled by pack size, not enough foot, didn't have a snow nose, didn't run as good for a strange handler????Could be one thing or several.
Terry did tell me that he ran Thunder alot and that as a rabbit dog he was very impressed with him and that while he was at Terry's several came to watch him run and bred females to him.
I have heard it a million times that "a good dog is a good dog wherever you turn him out ,in any situation and on all types of rabbits/hare.I agree with that statement that a good hound should adapt to all situations and account for his game.BUT,there are reasons that some hounds excell in one format on one type of game and don't on others.
There are lots of northern LP hounds that wouldn't stay down in a Mid-West S.P.O. trial on cottontails. There are lots of A.R.H.A. Little Pack dogs that wouldn't stay down long either.Likewise there are lots of cottontail dogs from down south that couldn't keep a LP pack on hare within hearing! There are lots of dogs that stuggle to keep a hare going on snow by themselves never mind in a LP trial. Bring your hounds that have never had to swim after their rabbits down to the southern bottoms and let them get after some swamp rabbits and I guarrentee some of them won't be able to cut it. There are some hounds that just don't want to run in a pack of 40-50 other hounds.Especially if they haven't been brought up and trained that way.One of the best hare dogs I've ever seen wouldn't stay running in a LP.He just hated all that commotion but with a gun in your hand he'd pound them for hours. Some hounds make their name in a particular region of the states in a particular format of trialing as is evidenced by reading the results. The northeast has their bloodlines, northern Michigan/Wisconsin have their favored kennels,Mid-West Assoc.results seem to show a couple lines dominating and if you go down to the Southern Large Pack you can see a whole nother group of bloodlines. There is some bleed over for sure but it still appears to me to be quite regionally oriented.I don't think this should come as a surprise as guys see more of the dogs in their own area and like them and breed to them. They have easier access both time wise and financially.
All this being said consider that Reggie won a World Hunt [running aganst both males and females] in the Little Pack format on cottontails, won under A.K.C.S.P.O.Mid-West judges on cottontails, won in A.K.C. Large Pack on Hare in the states, won under Canadian judges in Large Pack and placed 2'nd in the Trial of Champions [for those that don't know----that's a trial of ALL Field Champions!!! ].And you want to tell me that the dog really wasn't that good and is faulty???????? That kind of says to me that you might think all those judges got it wrong and that all of those folks that have opted to spend their hard earned money on his stud fee are wrong????????
Whether you think Reggie crossed with your good female can help you achieve the type of pup you are looking for and improve your kennel that is completely up to the individual.I linebreed the Blue Ninja blood and am always on the lookout for outstanding performers that carry it.Reggie being one,I.F.C. Beavercreek Blue Max, F.C.Pinnacle Hill Sport,F.C. Side Hill Keuka Blue,NLPC I.F.C. Green Bay Paw King and Statin's Blue Samurai being some others.
Just some food for thought. In the past 20 years I couldn't begin to count how many trials I've been to or judged.A.K.C Large Pack on Hare,A.K.C. S.P.O. on cottontail , A.K.C.Large Pack on swampers and A.R.H.A. Little Pack.I also couldn't begin to tell you how many beagles I've seen picked up by the judges for lack of hunt, back tracking, babbling, popping off, running off game, fighting, skirting, hooking, running off-line,ghost trailing, hanging around the gallery, won't pack, racing for the front, not scoring, running silent/tight mouthed, slipping the line,etc.,etc.,etc.
Don't know who all the sires were of those dogs but I can flat out guarrentee that 95% of them WERE NOT out of Reggie!!!!!!!!!

When the moment of truth arrives, the point of preparation has passed.

Chris I don't know the actual number but maybe you can answer a question how many have ever been trialed in akc?
Whats the answer?............
I think I asked FC Grand FC World FC and IFC in all formats, I believe he will go down as the greatest reproducer of all times, when you include people that want the above average hound in the field?

I wasn't going to post, but I think it's to funny not to. just to be clear all the blood u love in that hound is from up north. hahahahahahahahahaha
also u forgot one more thing your great state is famus for is KY lube. LMAO
I can appreciate Reggie blood came from the north, Krpan must have believed in a true rabbit hound, his susscess started with a hound named Dingus McCrae, I don't really know where he came from, but he produced some real good dogs....I know that Dingus offspring sure had the search and hunt which kind of got lost in the shuffle for a while. Thanks to everyone who has posted on this forum I appreciate all your comments...

Sorry to bust your bubble again Bill, but if Reggie is not a KY dog because "all of his blood came from up north" how can you say the dogs from "up north" are from "up north" when the beagle originated in Great Britan. Looks like to me all the blood "in this dog we love so well" came from Great Britan.

did u actually read what u just typed?? the last 5 gen on reggie are northern bread hounds, period. I know it's hard pill to swallow but u can choke it down. u know whats funny, not all but a lot of guys from KY think like u. ya think u have the best hounds, buddie u don't have enough horse power, thus the reason northern bread hounds started heading south. southern patch hounds are slower, southern mid west hounds are slower. ben like this for years. before u run off with that mouth, my dad is from KY, so when I was growing up in the 70's and 80's I seen plenty of ky hounds and seen how they didn't have the wheels to run. some guys got smart and started breeding northern hare hounds for the speed. like it or not that's the thruth.
