Re: Disappointed with quality of dogs
There's still good dogs....people just gotta realize that the grass ain't always greener on the other side. Quit buying dogs hundreds of miles away. If people wouldn't buy culls there wouldn't be a market for them. And lastly realize you can breed for good dogs....you can't breed for secretariats....sometimes they are just an accident.

Re: Disappointed with quality of dogs
See low, I will have to agree with maple valley. If you want to buy a dog go and run it and get a trial period. The hound is only worth what you will pay. I sold a very good female several months ago for alot of money but I told the guy to run her as much as he wanted and when he made up his mind that he liked what he saw give me a call and then the deal would be final. The guy gave me a call about 1 and 1/2 months later and said that the hound done everything that I said it would and that he was going to keep her. Now I had the money in hand before she left but put it up until he told me that it was final. Alot of people would not give that long of a time but for the price of her and her quality I felt that it was the right thing to do. The price of a hound should be based upon ability to run a rabbit. Many people would not even think of paying several thousands for a hound but those same people will spend twice that amount in culls trying to find a great hound for 300 bucks.
The good/great hounds are out there but it will cost to get one.

Old blood beagles......... I admire your nobility you did the right thing.... It's just that slot of people misrepresent and I can't hardly believe that they don't know better. I guess it all depends on what people think that dogs are worth.. I still try to trust my fellow man.. Most guys will give you a trial but if you drive an hour and a half. Your still out 100.00 in gas. Maybe I just put to must trust in what people know about a dog..

Re: Disappointed with quality of dogs
I've noticed alot of people you have to ask alot of questions because they want volunteer nothing Yes the dog may be able to run a rabbit quiet well but they forget to tell you the dog is fussy in the box are you got to go beat the stupid thing out of a hole 10 times a hunt ETC..These are some things you maynot see on a one trial basis I like to bring the dog to my territory keep it a week so i can see the pros and cons of the hound Because likes already been stated alot dont know what a real rabbit dog is As long as the dog will bark run a rabbit in a circle where they can blow its brains out they think they got a rabbit dog WRONG Any dog with a half brain and a leg can do that thats why when they see a sure nuff good dog thats all you here when they could have the same thing if they wanted one I dont know about any1 else i dont like looking for a dog all the time
Re: Disappointed with quality of dogs
See Low: as usual, you have good points. Quick anecdote: I bought a dog off a man once for $150. I asked him if it was a growler or fighter. He said no. I asked him if he wanted it back if I didn't like it, he said yes and he would give $50 for it back. I took the hound out that evening and it growled and fought everything I had. I called him to see if he would give the $50 and guess what, he said, no. I then asked him if he would give a good size pile of s**t for it and guess what, he said no. This same man had treated me this way before but, I fail to learn because I love him so. After all that, I put the dog where the sun never shines and just considered it a lost $150. Who's fault was this folly? mine of course. In some parts of the country, taking this type of advantage over a person is considered an art form not an ethical violation.
For that amount of money, I would rather just give it to a friend than go through the frustration of being treated this way but, I am old. I guess people just like to treat old people any old way. (pun intended)
Augerhead: A man's reach should always exceed his grasp but, in your case, it begins to sound like whining after a while. I am not sure you can be pleased in dogs. If you buy them over the net, you are happy. If you see them in the woods or try them out, you never are. I think the fantasy of just looking is what you are about. It is the journey but not the trophy you seek. Nothing really wrong with that approach except when you start saying that there are few good dogs out there. There are many but they don't just fall off apple trees.

See low said, "I hunt frontend rabbit minded dogs.. i wont settle for anything less.. im actually lookin for a nice young male dog.. but dont ask me more for him then i will take for mine unless you can beat me...."
I will pay your gas money to bring this dog to Michigan and show him off. If I can beat him, you must buy mine. If I cannot, I will buy yours no questions asked. We will define "beat" through a PM. To me that generally means get more crossings but to others, maybe something else indeed such as be a pure 'alligator" or something.
Augerhead: would this type of deal suit you? It may be the answer to your wishes.

bucks better beagles, If thats the way that guy did you on that dog he did you WRONG..... As for your dogs and the gas money.. I have lots of family in michigan some of wich like the same kind of dog that i do... Im sure i can have one of my cousins come and try what you have.. If he tells me the dog is worth what your asking then yes i will try to buy him.. He's got some pretty tough hounds.. If your dog can beat his "home dogs" then im all in.. would it be ok if i suggest that to him?
Re: Disappointed with quality of dogs
And by the way, I can tell by reading your post that you know what it takes to beat a dog...
Re: Disappointed with quality of dogs
I have also thought that hounds of today are not as good as the old hounds I have owned or that others have owned.
Buck you ain`t old till youv`e passed me up
I remember the hounds we used to own (rabbit) seemed they could run on any type snow, frozen ground, crusty snow what ever. Seems as though they can`t do it now. Have wondered if the nose has been bred out of them could be the climate change.
The comment was made to me (I can`t get a crossin on him) I don`t put much stock in a crossing,Yea it`s nice to see your hound cross first. I have been in races where the hound crossin first was not even opening in the pack. Then the hound would pick it up on a lose and boomba, you been out run. If all ya can hear is your own hounds you ain`t listenin to the race.
I`m here to tell ya folks, the dog did a number on my ol Buddy. I never new him to not go huntin but this time he was feelin purty dang bad.Wouldn`t even let me pick him and his dogs up and be his nanny and handeler.
He came out the night it happened and his arm was already red.He was in pain and for the first time ever I saw a little fear in his eyes.
Love ya like a brother Ol Buddy, glad every thing is ok. I woulda poured Iodine on thumper but you`d a had ta hold it
wireman252 seconded that.
Looks as though I may be back shortly, need to finish a roof here and Chad has a lot of work he needs help on.Might even put a hammer in your hand.

C-low: Send your home boy and your home dogs over and back up what you say. Funny though, you are the one that mentioned you had a front end runner and that is the one I am interested in. The idea was to sell a dog. You said, you only wanted to be one that could beat YOURS not your homeboy. So I can I buy one that isn't even in this state if my dogs beat his? This is beginning to sound kinda crooked again. The old c-low hoodoo.
Yea Charley, that dog got me pretty good but I got a little of him back. Looking forward to seeing you and I still have your horn. It's kinda like us. Oldy but goody.

Re: Disappointed with quality of dogs
Quality comes at a price if you want to find that one dog you have to work for it they don't usually come knocking at your door don't settle with a faulty dog they either have it or they don't. I was lucky to have pretty good mentors that put me on the right path and one thing I know is if you want to find the dog thats fits what your looking for exactly it usually is going to take a lot of time a lot of gas and a lot of patience not to mention your going to have to commit to putting in the early mornings and late nights it takes to have that dog reach it's full potential.
I think dogs today are better then they were in the old days I think we remember the dog for what it was at the top of it's game as a finished dog and not the thousands of hours we spent putting it on tracks breaking it off deer and looking for it when it ran off for no reason instead we keep the memory of those few short years when they are at there peak.
I wish you the best at finding what your looking for the good ones are out there it's just a question of weather or not your willing to do the work it takes to find them.

Bucks better beagles, I don't have the time to get up that way right now but if you still have this dog when I get there then I want to watch him go. My cousin's dogs and mine are pretty close. So I wanted to go that route but that's fine if you dread that. Now there is a young dog In mi floating around that I owned and if this is the dog that you have then I pass. Pm me with his pedigree if you don't mind. Thank you very much for for showing concern. Maybe I can get over and run with you sometime. And who knows maybe we can make a trade
