My new pup came from the Moore's kennel and they guaranteed it would run a rabbit.... They musta not had any doubts because holy crap can she run for her age... :D Heck they even called me askin if it would work out....

I woulda bought a running dog had they not of had a guarantee just because im tired of raising pups.... Now I would buy dogs from them with no warranty....

To me a rabbit dog should run rabbits and if i ever sell a pup i will give it a guarantee but i will be picky to who i sell too...
God isn't real, Beer is good and people are crazy, there I fixed it.

Thats the key being paticular who you sell to i have been in this long enough i can usally tell who is a mouth or a serious hunter if a man hasnt got enuff pride in his pups after he has raised a few out of the same cross you need to sell them as is health only guaratee. If i raise 3 litters out of 1 female and 1 or 2 runs and the rest are pets i do something different. If i had the means to start my pups and the room i would start them all then sell but i dont so i got to do what i got to do

Just some observations, speaking in General and adding an opinion or two. Regardless of how many times you have made a particular cross , not all of the pups will make rabbit dogs, If 50% of your pups make good rabbit dogs you are ahead of the game. I never make a breeding unless I need dogs, Never! I don't care who else needs dogs. Most people hope for a big litter, I am always hoping for three. When I get 6 to 9 pups , which is normal ,now I am going to have to move some. It would be unsual for me to sell any extra. I will try to start them all and the ones I feel aren't going to suit me I give them away. I have given quite a few away that the new owners were very pleased with. I have never sold a pup or a dog that someone wanted to return. But, I bet I have sold some that didn't work out for the new owner ( see the 50% rule above) . This is why I don't want to sell pups, there will be times someone will not get their moneys worth, and if YOU and I are not breeding for the money ( puppy mill) why don't we just go ahead and give the extra away. I know I have money in stud fees, shots, and wormers, but that is my responsibility for making the breeding . I know what George Pirman is saying and I lean very hard in that direction.

Wow, I diden't know what I started on this thread I guess. I have been very blessed with the dogs i have had through the years and the people I have delt with when it comes to breeders. The breeder I have delt with the longest has always said that if the dog dont hunt for you bring him/her back for the simple fack that if there was a dog out there that didnt perform he wanted to know so it could be culled if found to be not suited for the name behind it. I respect that tremendously and when I have a litter I will do the same. I can see there are alot of points of view on this issue and understand each one. But to not care what comes out of your kennals "once the tires leave the driveway" seems alittle shady to me.

George, is that a generally accepted definition or just your opinion? I know people who follow most of those guidelines but they breed just to keep one pup. The rest are simply sold cheap to have them a home.

I can guarantee that the pups that leave my place are out of two hounds that suit me. I socialize them, worm, and properly care for them to the best of my ability. I have folks asking for a pup or two out of a couple of my females so I do breed for others and myself. I have owned guarnateed hounds and I swear they were the ones that did not make it just about every time, go figure? I took up the seller on there guarantee though! I would replace a pup if the owner was in the position to take one and I had one I sure am not in this to make money! I have a job I like sometimes for that!!LOL. I don't think a PUPPY MILL is one litter plus a year where you sell over half, but that is my opinion on it. If I am selling beagles as pets as well as hunters that is where I think you lose the breeder tag, IMO, of producing a consistant hunting beagle. Again, just my thoughts on this.

Let me clarify one of my points, if you sell pups out of top hounds to folks for a pet I have no problem with that. If you breed two mediocre hounds hoping for a super cross and then keep the good looking, sound ones then sell the rest as "pets" I don't agree with that, but this is the great nation where you can do as you chose.

george pirman wrote:A PUPPY MILL - is someone that raises more then one litter a year and sells more then half of the pups raised or more then three litter within a 5 year period and sells more then half of each litter. If you raise the whole litter and start each one in a good starting pen then sell or cull some you maybe a breeder.

Im not to sure that is a correct assumption there but that is your opinion and your entitled to it!! I know plenty of reputable BREEDERS that are not nearly in this for $$$ and produce very good dogs and could care less about the money and they have many 3 litters a year from very TOP quality pups!! JMHO but I don't think 3 litters is considered a puppy mill!!

Here is the definition of a puppy mill!!

Definitions of Puppy mill on the Web:

A puppy mill, sometimes known as a puppy farm, is a commercial dog breeding facility that is operated with an emphasis upon profits above animal welfare and is often in substandard conditions regarding the well-being of dogs in their care. ...

A terrible place where puppies are bred in mass (often under severely inhumane conditions) for sale to dealers & pet stores.
www.caninest.com/dog-terminology/

Somebody who breeds puppies in mass for the purpose of resale (generally to a pet store) no regards are taken to proving the parent dogs are worthy of passing on their genetics. sounds like a puppy mill to me thats what i thought a mill would be Im not in it for the money but dont blame someone for selling a few pups out of a litter to help on feed and the raising of the litter dont know about everyone else but times are ruff for this ole country boy and every little bit helps If you have the room and means to train a whole litter and can afford it more power to you but i read in one post where if you didnt keep them all and train them you where a puppy mill i dont agree
