Rules
Jay, the rules will much easier to understand when you see them in action.
I suggest that if you get the opportunity, go to a trial or two and ask if you can "shadow" a judge. The experience will bring some of the rules into a better light. As you know, we are having the Morgan County Beagle Club trial on May 1st. I'll probably be judging that day, since I won't have a dog to enter. You are more than welcome to go out with me and run after some dogs. I think you will find that most judges would be open to the idea also. Hope this helps. *Brian*

What state has the power
Indiana Brian, and Bopeye, I am interested in what you run for blood lines. Might be interested in testing out the differents in the power of the snow hound and the power of the hounds you run. Maybe we could make some arrangments. Could be fun.

I have seen many differant dogs from all over.
I think in terms of pure speed yes michigan has alot of that.(maybe too much)
I think we also have dogs with alot of nose yes I have taken my dogs down to tennesse and ran rabbit down there. No differance to me than running up here. But no our dogs for the most part cannot take the heat.
They simply are not used to it.
As far as east coast dogs I have seen alot of good hare breed dogs come from the east coast LP breeding. They seem to have more line controll than alot of the dogs around here have. Maybe they give up a little foot but they as a whole seem to be smoother.
Now in my opinion only. I like a little more conservitive hare breed/cottontail breed dog upper med to med quick. The best dogs I am seeing as a hole are comming from mississippi.
They have hard hunt and good line controll with decent foot.
No they cannot run with my 15" hare breed dog.
But they do not run 5 wide when they are in a pack and I like that.

Alright Richard if you are that determined to see how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop. I have a gyp here that I will sell to you for $800 and you can test her. Her grandpa was IFC Taylor's Sock it to me on her dams side and he was great grandpa on sire's side.
Or I have a 10 month old pup out of Syris McGee and a Sock it to me female that I'll sell you for the same price to test.
I know, I know you are gonna say that those dogs originally came from up north and they are northern bloodlines etcetera etcetera.
They were bred in Kentucky. Born in Kentucky. Lived only in Kentucky, until I brought them to Tennessee. That makes them Tennessee hounds now. All dogs come from somewhere. Which dogs are best....? I haven't really fretted myself about this. I run what suits me. I only joined this thread to see what folks responses were gonna be, not to set up some sort of North-South pseudo world championship test.
I haven't the time nor the inclination to have myself mired into this any further. I guess if the "global warming" trend continues then nobody will have to worry about hunting in 3' of snow at -13 below for months on end.
Right now I am still desperately searching for that island where Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley and Jimmy Hoffa are hanging out. Keeps me busy.
O.K. I'll quit. It's late and to tell you the truth I hope everyone has hounds in their kennel that they think are the worlds greatest. That's what drives a houndsman isn't it. We all search for the perfect dog, however all of our interpretations on what the perfect dog happens to be is different. Keep on running 'em.

What state has the power
Bopeye,I think you have me all wrong. I am Interested in the differences of the hounds. As you say you have hounds that go back to blood lines from up this way, but what makes them different is the traits we breed for. I see the hounds getting rougher and faster up here. Trials are getting shorter, stamina, and hunt are getting harder to find. Recently I saw a 13" male go all the way to the end of a trial, and ghost trailed. Do not like some of the things I see at trails. I breed for a med. to fast dog that will run hare or cotton tail. I breed hunting dogs that run in the snow.
I have sent dogs to Louisiana and friends of mine also do this. Our experiences have been that only one dog sent could run right off the plane. They were good running dogs. I have seen it the other way also when dogs came up they didn't know what to do in the snow. I was hoping that you might have some patch hounds that have been breed to run cotton tail. I am looking for a 15 " bitch.

When I see the pedigrees of hounds winning anywhere that looks for accomplishment I see hounds from Michigan, Ontario, Vermont, New York, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia more than anywhere else. I don't know if that's what the original question was about or not but most everyone's bloodlines are traced back to these states and provinces. I think that you could make a strong case for the Kentuckians' participation and dedication to beagling though.
Ohio has the POWER
2of the 3 WORLD CHAMPIONS are from south central OHIO!!!!!!! So that tells were the Power was this year.
I think you could find all the power that you would ever need to put behind a rabbit right here in my pens in Georgia. At least all the power that I would ever want to put behind one, but the everybody thinks their dogs are the best, or they should be looking to get something else.
I have to agree with Bopeye on this subject it should just be dropped cause it will never be settled
