A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
Just out of curiosity, when talking speed do most of you mean like, how fast a dog can run if it was chasing a car down your drive or how fast it can run a rabbit/hare while staying on the line enough that they don't lose it? I think there is a difference between the two, wondering how many guys will change their answer to the original question with that in mind......
Norwester the fastest hound I ever saw chase a car was a fox hound named Jake. He ended up at a golf course I used to live near when I was a kid. A man named John Lancaster used to feed him every day. He would sleep under a tree near the 15th tee. When he saw his car he would get up and stretch then explode down the second fairway then make the turn around the pond and head for home. He would beat John to the club house parking lot every time. We used to watch hin throw up dirt when he made the turn down #1.
The fast beagle I own can lock on a track and drive it right. I have judged and or watched dogs that were so "fast" that they would start running before the had a track. My opinion is strictly on the tracking speed with a nose full of rabbit. I love to solo my fast female and hear her get the rythym and start flowing through direction changes. I am sure there are faster ones out there, probably tied out behind somebody's garage or laid under a tree on a golf course.

I'm talking about a dog thats fast on the track. Not one that over runs a alot, or that ghost trails, or one that runs a thousand yards in a check. I don't mean a sight chase either. Just a dog that is fast running a track trough the briars or the weeds.
Buddy Jude brought up a good point. Not all dogs out of a "line" are bred by the same people. Some breed for different things and some don't know what the hell they are doing. You will get all kinds of dogs out of a "line" depending on who bred them. With that in mind, the lines I mentioned earlier, IMO, are the best for producing track speed.
When and if you come here I will show you rabbits dogs I will set dwn with any man. I won't say they are fast, but will say if you run all day theywill seem fast before the day is done.Myself , I want hounds that can get it done without upsetting me and it don't much of cull sh-- to upset me. Bjones you come on out here and I will show a good time hunting and if you have young dogs we will get them going in short order.NWSTER , let me know when you think you will come. I have the young fellow you hunted with under my wing and he is learning quickly, hes doing ok.
i have seen some Haunted Hills Preacher/Shaker stuff that was crossed with Turbo stuff that was the fastest that i have seen. Not like a flashy fast but smooth and could really use their nose to roll on with it. Definetly could lead a pack and hunt was second to none.
