I agree jumpdog. Even show type beagles I'm sure can be trained to run rabbit, some may not, but some rabbit dawgs might not either.
I had a mut that learned to chase hare all on her own simply by taking her with me when I checked rabbit snairs as a kid. She was the neighbors dog about 4 years old when they moved next door. My neighbor said that she would sit and wait all day for me to get home from school to hang out with me and my friend.
Also my buddy got a border collie that we would take out in the woods hiking with us and when I was trianing pups she would try to ambush the hare for a long time, after awhile she was running with the hounds, so we broke her from that and still let her come along to try to catch the odd one. She is a tennis ball freak and you can't get her mind off the ball except when she sees the hounds are comming along she drops it and doesn't bother with it at all.

Noreast,
Not sure where you are going with your post. Everyone has seen some mutts or off breed dogs that will run a rabbit or two. And as far as pet store beagles, or show beagles, I was not implying that occasionaly some of those might not make a decent rabbit hound. However, I think everyone would agree that you stand a much better chance of making a good or great hound if you start with beagles bred for hunting rabbit.
Various breeds of hound and strains within a breed have been successfully bred to pursue various types of game. That does not mean you could not take a black and tan pup, for example, from a good line of coonhounds and train him to run rabbit, fox or other game. With early exposure, reward and correction you could overcome his natural tendancy to run coon and teach him to run rabbit.
There are strains of hound that have been specially bred (and of course trained) to run bear, cats etc.
I suppose with enough training you might be able to get a beagle to run coon, though I doubt you could ever instill the ability to stay treed.
My point is that lines of hounds can be, and commonly are, bred to pursue one type of game over another. There is no reason to believe that these tendancies are not somewhat linked to genetics (breeding).
So could you ever breed a line that is totally straight for the desired game? I doubt it. There are to many other possible influences.
But it sure seems that you would stand a much better chance of reducing the tendancy to be trashy by selectively breeding hounds that have been, for the most part, naturally straight.
