Re: Island snow
The last I knew ,You could not get out to Sheep Ranch Rd. They had it groomed for sleds. But that was befor the rain melted most of the snow. The snow has a layer of crusty Ice on it and unless it snows the running might not be that good. Plus it will tear up the dogs feet.

Talked with Paul and he said they had about a foot, with crust that might or might not hold a man depending on exposure. Said they had got a couple more inches on top the crust with 50-60% chance of more snow coming. This time of year anything can happen, you just take what comes and make the best of it, kinda like hunting...
Imho, the hare cycle has been going down the last couple years but this is not all bad, longer runs and less splits. The less hare, the less hunters, the more I feel the world as it was years ago. Just as our society has become plagued by lazy entitlements, so do our hounds and our choices of whats essential and acceptable in our hounds for hunting to be productive. Lean times make us look differently at quality or lack-there-of because traits such as hunt, desire, determination and courage come more into play as to whether we attain any degree of success or not. This has always been one divider between the good and the really good when it comes to hounds. When hounds are made to try and all odds seem to be against them, we start to see the real cream start to rise to the top.
To a houndsman, shortage of game has never dulled the appetite for hunting, more so, it increases the anticipation of testing his charges and their inbred gifts and abilities to hunt, find and stick to their game, for hast is waste when the pickens are slim...
Down times are curse to the man who hunts to boost his numbers, but a blessing to those who wish to boost the quality of their hunters...
