I agree with Maple Valley and RAD.
First off, I have not run dogs in any trials. But I may in the future.
I have read about several trials on this board all throuhgout the summer. If you don't condition your dogs to run in the heat as well as the cold, you are just asking for trouble. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying run them to death in the heat or the cold.
I just weaned a litter of seven pups off my Pine Mt. Dyer's Eve. I as well as my son have soloed here a few times in the last three weeks. Just trying to get her back in shape.
My step-dad on the other hand has kept his dogs tied all summer, mainly to keep them out of the garden. He has on that is really fond of duck eggs.
This past Saturday we hit the strp mines at about 8:30pm. His Zero dog jumped the first rabbit, his ram dog harked in, the race was on. After about, I'm guessing 3-5 minutes both his dogs quit the rabbit. By this time my Eve had picked up the race and kept it going for 45 minutes by herself. It was still upper 80's to low 90's. Because my dog was conditioned better she out did older and more experienced dogs. How ever the second race was just as long or longer, all three dogs stayed in. When it was over we calle the dog in for water, Eve drank half a 16 ounce bowl and went back to hunting on her own. Zero and Ram drank 2 and 3 bowls respectfully, then laid around the truck resting before they rejoined the hunt.
If a dog cannot do what I need it to do, it will not stay at my house. If the dog can't stand the heat as well as the cold, cull it.

I was told a long time ago beagle's should have "No Fear In Their Eyes No Quit In Their Hearts No Respect For Their Own Bodies" and to cull the rest.
My dog had none of these and thats why he feel out in the heat.

i only had one dog quit on me,it was my choice to call the others in,rowdy never quits, but when i bought him back a few months agomhe was way overweight, and still is,i know that is why he quit,as for my iron eagle blood, they have no limits,no quit,i have no reservations about them runnin all day,but i choose not to push my luck, after seein what my bawler dog went through last year when he had a heat stroke,i would not risk it,they will be ready,i know they will.RAD wrote:breeding program some have it some don't. maybe someday they'll tell us their secert danny

RAD Thank god yall put em thru the paces. Cause from one extreme to the next, Im either sitting in front of an AC in these temps or a heater when it gets too cold...lol Dont know about my hounds but Im way too delicate to be exposed to those types of weather patterns...

THIS IS A LOT BETTER SUBJECT THAN IT STARTED OUT TO BE ,I WILL FALL ON THE SIDE OF" RAD",JIMBO" WILD BILL MASON.AS FOR THE HOUNDS I RAN -2- SINCE 10:15 THIS MORNING TILL ABOUT 1-HR AGO TURNED -2- MORE LOOSE WILL GET THEM IN THE MORNING .I PERSONALLY THINK THAT WHEN A WELL BRED HOUND GET'S ALL IT WANT' IT WILL QUIT.AND THE QUITTERS DON'T LAST LONG HERE.I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD RUN WHAT THEY LIKE FOR SURE.I THINK EVEN A DOG THAT IS NOT IN CONDITION SHOULD RUN TILL IT DIES ON THE TRACK I EXPECT IT WILL STOP FOR WATER MORE BUT SHOULD KEEP GOING BACK.IF A HOUND IS NOT DEAD GAME IT WILL NEVER REACH FULL POTENTIAL BECAUSE IT WILL NOT PUSH IT'S SELF.BUT IT STILL COULD BE A GOD RABBIT DOG FOR SOME PEOPLE .A LOT OF FOLK'S ONLY HUNT A COUPLE DAY'S A WEEK AND HALF DAY'S.SO THERE IS A DOG TO SUIT YOU SOME WHERE -----------AND YES I BREED BY THE SAYING-NO FEAR IN THEIR EYES -NO QUIT IN THEIR HEARTS NO ]RESPECT FOR THEIR OWN BODIES---[/b]
IF YOU DON'T HAVE THAT --GOOD LUCK-------P.S.I HAD A HOUND THAT RAN IN A HUNT IN ABOUT 95% WEATHER GOT BIT HARD BY A COPPER HEAD AND WAS STILL GETTING CHECKS----

Spoken like it should be
Rufus I'll agree 110% with that. I've heard that story about Ol Voo more than once, thats insane desire, what we should all strive for. I got a big male here at the house, that has plenty of grit, gutted him in indiana in the strips with the big boys for days in a row, just ask ol Jimbo. Toughest young hound I have put hands on in a while. The heat is a killer for sure, done everything in my power to keep some 1 1/2 week old pups cool and still lost 4 out of 6. Just bad luck I guess. I hate summer pups. I sure am ready for october weather to get here.Pine Mt Beagles wrote:WELL

Rufus, I would say that you are successfully breeding to this standard. Will and Jimmie have done got me hooked on these dogs ya'll are breeding and both credit you and your breeding for what they have. I'm just an ol rabbit hunter that loves to watch a dog work and in 30 some odd years of shootin over dogs I have never seen dogs with as much drive and shear hatred for rabbits as these. No fear in there eyes---no quit in there hearts---and will flat out abuse themselves get'n after it.AND YES I BREED BY THE SAYING--- NO FEAR IN THEIR EYE'S --NO QUIT IN THEIR HEARTS--NO RESPECT FOR THEIR OWN BODIES---
IF YOU DON'T HAVE THAT --GOOD LUCK-------
