bluegrass wrote:Hey Gabe, you just reminded me of a story that Bert Spicer told me at his house one day...we were discussing Blueback and he said this...

"Tony, there was a time and I ain't making this up, that if you had been here you wouldn't have given a nickel for old Blueback. I used to keep some San Juan rabbits around here to let the younger dogs mess with them from time to time and I looked out back one evening at the house that I had Blueback tied out to. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself, but there was a water pan sitting out from the house a little bit, and on one side sat Blueback taking a drink, on the other side sat a fat San Juan taking a drink too."

Bert said he thought the only reason Blueback allowed that rabbit to drink out of the same pan was that he (Blueback) knew he couldn't get to run that rabbit cuz he was tied up. Or, maybe he just felt like a little company that evening....Either way, you could tell just talking to Bert that he really missed that hound. Said he gave him a single hot dog every evening without fail.

I heard the exact story to a tee.I have judged blueback several times , still got the pic when wayne waits won opens with waits amy i won champs with cody sharps jackson and ol jug headed scottie won grands with blueback at indiana state all 3 of us smiling like we just ate sawbriars.
Call a tater a tater, gabe is right for a change. All the offspring seemed sorta sometimey to me . Blueback could run with the best of em. i judged him once , when he won by 6 checks against pretty stiff dogs. Most people didnt want much of him especially at the end of rabbit season. And ur right scotty and burt still grieve over that ol dog. So lets let him rip

Most of the Blueback offspring I have seen have EXTREME desire and hunt.
When I put my pup up he just about jumps over the chanilink to get back out hunting and raises all kinds of hell.

I too own an old school Branko/Spicers Blue Back pup who is about 5 months old w/ extreme hunt and desire. I'm taking it easy on her also, I'm hoping she's going to make a good one.

The most impressive quality of Blueback is the way he imprinted his offspring even 3 to 4 generations down the line. Actually, Spicer's Blueback is the Great Grandfather to my pup, followed by Coty's Blue Bogus then Diebold's Lil Dutchman. Granted the bottomside is old school Branko but from hunting with Dutch last season I am seeing a mirror image of his style. Pretty impressive stuff. It is like a dream come true and I had my doubts that this would happen but now am a believer in the Blueback and Blueback X old Branko crosses.
This pup hunts with extreme desire to catch the rabbit. He is still learning but I am confident he is going to be a lifetime type dog based on what I am witnessing. Hopefulling he will keep progressing and not blowup. I am keeping the pressure down on him. A lot solo work and 30 minute runs on week nights running twice on weeekdays for around 30 minutes each session. He gets a rabbit up withing 5 minutes everytime out (backyard woods).
I just started working this dog three weeks ago for the first time. I caught a live rabbit and let him kill it. After that, the rest is histroy. :D
jonnyringo - this was the 1st time I've make a Branko/Blue Back cross, but if things go the way their going, it sure won't be the last, I agree 100%!

I have a direct daugther of Spicer's Blueback. She is out of Blueback and Spicer's Hunter ( Spicer's Nikki ). I also have 2 other dogs that have Blueback as the grandfather on the top side and sired by Cotys Blue Bogus ( son of Blueback ). These 3 dogs are here to stay. I am not a trailer just a rabbit hunter that likes running good rabbit dogs and have been doing so for about 36 years. They hit it hard out of the box until they are back in. Hard all day hunt with foot speed from about 7 to 8 and have the brains to run a rabbit the way they are suppose to.I just got a litter of 9 pups out of Spicer's Nikki and Cedar Hills Hank ( son of Bogus ) and between my son and myself will be keeping 3 of them.

Steve,
I never bought a dog out that litter but Terry and Rod did. My Blueback is out of Joe Diebold's Lil Dutchman (ARHA LP Champion) crossed with an old time Branko blood bitch. I did see Rod's female run last winter when she was very young. I really don't know much about Terry's dog or any others out that litter. Bogus was your pup's father and Well's Bonnie was his bitch - correct?
