I have been going up there for the last several years and must say it is the most enjoyable thing I do all year. We ran in the trout lake area for the first time last year. It was a nice place not too far from the lake. Plenty of hare there as well. Now I'm on the edge. I don't think we'll go there anymore although one must ask, is there a safe place to run at all in the UP.
Two years ago while driving on a two track, me and Crabby came up on two wolves. Big as a shetland ponies. They disappeared very quickly into the brush. I hate those things.

Nope, northern WI neither.

Our DNR estimates the count to be 800 now, problem is, the ones that "count" them are a bunch of tree huggers listening for howling (this is how they count them ).
I would put money on it that there are 3,000 in WI alone. I go to my cabin in the winter and the logging roads are nothing but wolf tracks where they run them trying to cut a deer track.

I remember back in the late 80's and 90's where the DNR came out every year with an estimate of 340 to 348. The goal was 350 carrying capacity, amazing how for more than 10 years the number never quite got there!

I believe Ill be REMOVING that U.P. hare trip off my bucket list. Seems like a chance i don't want to take with my hounds even if they are a bunch of culls!

What draws the wolves/coyotes into the dogs? Is it the thought of a meal or is it territorial or is it different for both wolves and coyotes? And once again sorry for your loss

We have coyote's bad where I live, and snakes are always around. Someone always has a hand gun on hand. Usually everyone has one that goes running. Really hate to hear that about your dogs. They brought coyote's here for basically the same reason. Thought it would be a good idea. Bad thing is they have no predator's, and its so hilly here it's hard to hunt them. Dirty shame if you ask me. Understand what you are dealing with.

They will kill anything regardless if it's in their territory or not. They may not even eat it either. Just do it to be doing it. It's in their nature.

I sure hate it happened . It's a shame. I've been running up there for 11 years now. We see a wolf or two nearly every trip up. They have never gave us any trouble. We have been lucky.

Maybe if everybody would stop going there the state will realize how much money they are loosing. We should refuse to hunt wolves and hare until the wolf population gets so out of control they they become a danger to people. Maybe that would teach the tree huggers a lesson. They could make more money from wolf permits and hare hunting if they control the number of wolves.

That pretty much sucks and I'm sure made for a long drive home. I always carry a concealed pistol just in case something bad happens when I'm snowmobiling up there. I've seen tracks but never seen any wolves when riding.

ig it was my dogs i would be out hunting them. no compencation for dog lose is what it says in the laws. i`ll pay the fine.

Jim I am truly sorry to see this. This is the reason I no longer run in the U.P. I lost my best hounds years ago to a motrcycle hitting her I cannot imagine what it would be like to have this happen. I truly believe that it is now the hunters resposibilty to solve this problem as our govt. will not because when numbers become low again they will become protected and never go away!

This post has caught my eye for many reasons, 1 of which being that i couldn't imagine losing my dogs like this . Mainly this has caught my attention because i have several kids and i have been trying to take one of my sons out with me lately and plan on taking them all eventually. I already take them deer hunting but want them all to learn how to handle the dogs and there is just something special about listening to dogs run and i want my children to experience this at a young age just like i did. I live in Maryland and have been searching the web since this morning but can not find any stories of wolves/coyotes attacking here . What i did find is that this kind of thing seems to happen alot especially in Michigan, Wisconsin and states further west. My question is has there ever been an incident where a human was attacked while out hunting with dogs or do these predators try to keep their distance from humans, i would hate to be out with one or all of my children and have to worry about this. Also have any of you guys from Maryland ,West Virginia or Pa. ever had any close encounters with either of these predators or is it something we really just don't have to worry about around here for the time being?
